Lily and Jared
How We Met
Jared and I met in 2014 on a Young Life Leader’s retreat. he was a Young Life college leader and I was in training to lead at a high school in our college town. I remember thinking that he was so handsome and confident in who he was. We argued over a game of shuffleboard on that retreat and to this day I give him crap about how I was right, the sand makes the discs slide better!
After returning home from the retreat, we got coffee a few days later and talked for hours on the deck of the student center. A week later we went on our first date, where there was a beautiful bouquet of flowers waiting for me on the table. I was smitten. we spent so much time together, I still lived in the dorms so Jared would come and eat at the cafeteria with me everyday and then walk me to class. After a month of getting to know each other and making two separate road trips to meet one another’s family, Jared asked me to be his girlfriend, officially, and the rest is history!!
How He Asked
I actually found my diamond on accident months before the proposal…oops! So I was on edge on every trip we went on from then on. WHEN WILL IT HAPPEN?!? Was always running through my brain. By Christmas I’d resolved to stop worrying about it, no way he’d propose during the holiday and, since his birthday is at the end of the month as well, I figured we wouldn’t get engaged until the next year.
A few days after Christmas, Jared’s parents came to my parent’s hours for a late Christmas celebration and Jared mentioned wanting to go to their hotel to help them get settled in. I thought that seemed odd but didn’t think much of it. After Jared left, our doorbell rang, I opened it to find one of my lifelong friends, Alyx. Now I KNEW something was up. She handed me a card which read something like:
“Lily, I am sure you’ve figured out what’s happening by now. Please go get your nails done and go shopping to pick out the perfect outfit, on me. I’ll see you later.” I was giddy!! We went and got our nails done and picked out the perfect blue dress for me to wear. But that was all I knew.
After some pampering, we went home to get ready. I was panicking about being late, to which Alyx said “If we’re late, they’ll wait. It’s not like he’s gonna propose to someone else if you don’t show up on time!”
As we drove away from my parent’s house, I still had no idea where we were going. And then we pulled into the parking lot of the church I grew up in. I had interned there the previous summer and it was like a second home to me. As we walked into the doors, friends, and family stood there with candles lighting the way. Instant tears. Once I had hugged everyone, I walked through the doors into the auditorium. Jared was standing on stage. Man, that walk to the stage felt so long and awkward and all I could say was “hey dude”!
When I finally got up there, Jared told me how much he loved me and then got on one knee and asked me to marry him! Of course, I shouted YES!! Afterward we celebrated with a few pictures at the church and then went to my parents’ house where my mom had prepared an entire engagement party for us. And on April 26th, 2018 I married my best friend.
