Lily and Cameron
How We Met
Cameron and I first met in the stands of Spartan Stadium at Castleton University. I was a Rhode Island freshman, he a sophomore from Vermont. We found ourselves in the stands together as teammates of an intramural flag football team. Early on in the semester my suitemate had asked me to join the team because they needed another girl. I was in a serious relationship with my highschool sweetheart at the time who was a student at the nearby Middlebury College; so, I went to my first flag football practice hoping to just have a good time with a fun game. Halfway into the semester, my boyfriend broke up with me, and in the process broke my heart. That day just so happened to be Cameron’s birthday. Ever patient, Cameron gave me time to move on from my ex and grow our friendship. In January 2010 he asked me to be his girlfriend and we’ve been going steady ever since.
How He Asked
In January of 2016, our 6th year anniversary came and went. I was beginning to feel the possibility of a proposal in the near future dwindle. The week after our anniversary, I had my nails done for a work party Cameron asked “how long does the polish last?” “10 days,” I replied, and, my mind spinning, I contemplated what prompted his question. A few days later, he asked “Want to go for a walk on the beach with Tucker on Saturday?” “Sure!”
Saturday came, along with a snowstorm; I knew for sure our walk wasn’t going to happen. The next day church was cancelled, so we decided to go for a walk. The sun was out and it was the most beautiful day. We walked the entire length of the beach, taking pictures with Tucker (my dog) and enjoying the calm after the storm. Towards the end of the walk we went up onto the pavilion porch at the beach. There, on the porch where my Grandmother used to sit, with the ring that used to be hers, Cameron asked me and Tucker to marry him.
