How We Met

Timothy and I were both on active duty in the US Navy when we met. He was temporarily assigned to my ship as we set out on an 8 month deployment. He smiled at me until he got the courage to introduce himself in the galley. Before we hit out first port of South Korea, he asked me if he could take me for some hot coco once we had a day off. I joked and said “sure, call me” knowing neither of us had working cell phones. It wasn’t until about a year after that, after he went back to his command and I left active duty, that we reconnected.

How He Asked

My mother and I had just driven back from our three day road trip from New York. Tim drove in to Tucson from San Diego to meet me after a very long and traumatic summer away. After spending the weekend with my family, he was sluggish to leave as he packed his things. I am not a fan of moments of conversations that linger so I told him it was time to go, and walked him outside. As we hit the driveway he said “I don’t think you should call me your man-friend anymore” (as I often did because we had been dating so long and he was now well into his 30’s). He said, kneeling down on a knee “I think you should call me your fiancé”. Right there in front of my childhood home, when we finally had a moment alone together, this big butter-ball asked me to marry him.
