Lexus and Ellery
How We Met
Ellery and I met at the University of Arizona. He was in his third year and I was in my second. I had met him a few times before at random parties and always knew him as the “Pikapp DJ”. All my girlfriends hung around with Pi Kapp boys (the fraternity he was in) and one night I was invited to a birthday dinner for our friend Brooke. I really didn’t want to go, I had a headache that day, but my best friend Spencer picked out an outfit for me and insisted I tag along. Ellery was sitting down the table from us (there were about 25 people at the dinner party) and about half way thru dinner he asked to switch seats with the person sitting across from me. Immediately we started talking, sharing laughs and enjoying some strong margaritas. Before I knew it, I was sitting on his lap and totally lost in conversation with him. He kissed me on the cab ride home, but I never gave him my number so I just assumed it was a one night fling.
The next day, I received a text from him. I asked him how he had gotten my number and he said a friend of his in the fraternity had given it to him. He quickly asked if he could take me out on a date. I was hesitant, as I had just the year before gotten out of a 4-year relationship and was honestly enjoying my time being single. I made up an excuse as to why I couldn’t get dinner with him. The next day, he texted me and asked me out again. The same thing happened for almost a week before I finally gave in and agreed to go out with him. Looking back, I applaud him because man, he sure was persistent and wouldn’t take no for an answer!
We went out to dinner and had an amazing time. I went back to his Frat House with him after and we stayed up all night talking. Talking about his past, my past, things we had done, mistakes we had made. We both laid it all out on the table. I remember looking out the window as the sun was coming up and thought to myself, there is something special about this guy.
After that, we were basically inseparable. Things moved quickly, and he asked me to be his girlfriend. I have a very odd obsession with the number 3, so I waited until it was March 3rd to finally say okay, I’ll be your girlfriend. I know, I’m weird…but I really wanted our Anniversary to be 03/03/2013 :) Around this time I remember calling my grandmother, who is my best friend. I remember crying and telling her I was scared because I had developed VERY strong feelings for this man very quickly. I didn’t know if I was making a mistake. She told me “Always follow your heart. If you feel like this man is right for you, ignore what is right and lead with your feelings.” I will never forget that conversation. It was after that conversation I knew I had found the man I was going to marry.
After one more year in Arizona, we moved to California together where Ellery attended law school!
How He Asked
March 3rd, 2018. It was our 5 year Anniversary. We had planned a weekend getaway to celebrate in none other than our favorite place EVER, Palm Springs. Ellery’s family has a vacation home there and we go a few times a year. Something about the energy and vibe is so relaxing and we always have the best time there. We had discussed getting married and spending our lives together many times. I knew that it would happen, I was just uncertain as to when. My boyfriend graduated Pepperdine Law this year and got an incredible job as a personal injury attorney. While it has been an incredible year for him, it has been the hardest year for me. I lost my Dad in November after a courageous battle with lung cancer. My Dad absolutely adored Ellery, and when I would tell him how badly I wanted to get engaged and start our future, he would calmly reassure me, “be patient Lex, it will happen right when it’s supposed to.” And boy…. was my Dad right.
On the morning of our 5 year anniversary, we went out to brunch at the famous Cheeky’s and had an awesome meal. It was a gorgeous day and we had planned to go to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to take the tram up to the mountain. We had heard incredible things from Ellery’s dad, who said the views from 8,500 ft. up were pretty spectacular. We were told that it would be freezing at the top (there was snow!!!) and to dress accordingly. I am a crazy OCD packer and had all my outfits laid out days before we left. Well, of course as we’re rushing out the door to leave, I leave my jacket hanging in my closet. Needless to say, my dress and sweater definitely wasn’t the most “weather appropriate” outfit, but I rolled with it. I’m originally from Maine so I knew I could handle the cold for a few. We took the tram up the mountain and it was such an incredible view. Once arriving at the top, Ellery told me he needed to run to the bathroom quickly, so I sat at a table in the Dining Hall and waited for him. 10 minutes later he returns and suggests we go outside for a few photos.
We walk outside, and a man is standing on the deck with his child. As we approach him, he looks at us and asks “Do you want me to take a picture of you guys?” Ellery responded, “Yes, that would be perfect! Actually, could you take a video instead? We’re here celebrating our 5 year Anniversary.” It was in that moment, that I knew he was up to something. My heart started racing as he took my hands and told me how much he loved me and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. Honestly, I kind of blacked out a little (everyone always says that but trust me…its true) and I just started sobbing. I couldn’t say anything except “Oh my god!!! Oh my god!!!”
He got down on one knee and when he opened the ring box, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was truly the most stunning thing I had ever seen. I screamed YES and couldn’t hug him quick enough. The best part was the commentary in the video from the total stranger recording, who had no idea what was about to happen.
I couldn’t stop crying and as we walked back into the dining hall, everyone started clapping and congratulating us. I was on CLOUD 9. I called some immediate friends and family to share the incredible news. It was simultaneously the most incredible moment of my life, but also a very sad moment because I so badly wanted to call my Dad to tell him the news. I know he would have been so over the moon, and it was a hard pill to swallow that I couldn’t hear his reaction on the other end of the phone.
We took the tram back down to the bottom so we could head back to the house and celebrate with champagne by the pool. As we were riding down, the song Perfect by Ed Sheeran and Beyonce (which is OUR song) started playing thru the speakers. I looked at Ellery in disbelief and said, “I don’t remember music playing on the ride up…. did you ask them to put this song on?!” He said he hadn’t. It was in that moment that I knew my Dad was absolutely with us, celebrating in the magic that had just taken place. I was speechless and felt a sense of calmness wash over me.
I always dreamed of what my engagement would look like. And let me tell you, it far surpassed any dream I have ever had. Ladies- don’t ever settle for less than what you deserve. You can have that fairytale ending that you’ve dreamed of since you were a little girl. Ellery has proven to me over the past 5 years, that it is true when they say there’s a soulmate out there for everyone. I truly can’t imagine who I would be or what I would be doing without him. I can’t wait to spend forever with the man of my dreams!!!!
