Lexi and Caleb
How We Met
From Caleb: Looking back over the past two years since Lexi and I met, I can’t help but get teary-eyed. I am dumbfounded as to how the stars aligned, allowing us to end up in the same city, meet, and fall in love so perfectly. Lexi is from the small town of Roswell, New Mexico, and I am from another small town called Wichita Falls in Texas. I never dreamed of going to Texas Tech, but something seemed to be pulling me that way. Since transferring to Texas Tech my sophomore year of college, I have had the most incredible friendships and memories I could ask for. I also met the love of my life!
I’ve had my eyes on Lexi since I met her. Her brother and I are friends, and I remember thinking how beautiful, sweet, and caring his sister seemed. Throughout my life, I have been scared to really fall in love, though. With some bad experiences, its easy to kind of check out, and believe that fairytales are just for movies.
One night at Carol of Lights, a Christmas tradition at Texas Tech, I saw Lexi with a group of her friends. As soon as I saw her, I knew I had to ask her on a date. I am not the type of person to get nervous, but I just couldn’t bring myself to ask her. After the event, I got into my car and sat there for nearly an hour debating whether to text her or not. Finally, I typed out a message and asked her to go grab milkshakes at Chick-Fil-A. To my surprise, she said yes!
The next day (come to find out, we were both incredibly nervous) I picked her up. From the second we sat down, I knew she was the closest thing to an angel on this earth. First of all, who agrees to go on a first date to Chick-Fil-A?! Second, we didn’t even get to drink our milkshakes because we were talking and laughing so much. We sat there for nearly three hours. From that point on, I knew she was the one.
I asked Lexi to officially be my girlfriend on December 16th in Steamboat Springs, CO on a ski trip with nineteen of our closest friends. The next two years were filled with good times and bad. I am super involved in my work and school. I have just completed my Masters of Business Administration, and during my undergrad, I ran for Student Body Vice President – and won! Throughout all of my busyness, Lexi has always been steadfast, patient, and loving. She is patient when I am tired, loving when I am irritated, and reliably optimistic – even when life seems hard. From cross-country road trips to quiet movie nights, our relationship so far has been one thing: an incredible and unique adventure.
How He Asked
From Caleb: Just a few weeks ago, I was officially offered a job working on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. for the United States House of Representatives. I will be moving the our nation’s capitol at the start of the new year, and I knew I couldn’t take on this adventure without Lexi by my side. I was incredible nervous, but I knew I couldn’t miss this opportunity to spend the rest of my life with the most incredible girl on this earth.
I knew from the start that I wanted to propose in DC, but I also knew we wanted all of our friends to celebrate with us, so I came up with a plan.
Lexi and I would fly to D.C., and our parents would surprise her there. With a stroke of luck (and a few phone calls) I was able to propose in a place that only a few in the world have had an opportunity to visit: The Speaker of The House Balcony at the Capitol Building. The balcony overlooks the National Mall, and is one of the most iconic locations in the United States.
After our parents surprised her, we walked out onto the balcony, and I grabbed her hand and looked out over DC. Pushing back tears, I said, “Lexi Kate, the next few years will be tough. I am moving across the United States to work at a job that I know will require long hours and late nights. But, Lexi, I know I can’t do it without you. This beautiful city will be our home, and I couldn’t ask for a better wife, teammate, and best friend to tackle this adventure with.”
After crying a bit more, I got on one knee, and asked the most beautiful, compassionate, hilarious, and loving lady ever created to be my wife. And she said YES!!
After the proposal, we flew back to Texas, and all of our friends and family were waiting to surprise us at Chick-Fil-A to have milkshakes in honor of our first date. It was the most perfect weekend of my entire life.
Since dating Lexi, I have learned a lot. I think too many people spend too much time looking for their fairy tale. In our search, we tend to let some of the best opportunities pass us by.
I have never been more thankful that I took the risk to ask Lexi on our first date two years ago. I was incredibly nervous, and I never thought I would be deserving of a girl like her. But I have never been more thankful that I asked.
The past two years haven’t been a fairy tale. In fact, it’s been pretty dang tough. We are both far from perfect.
What I found, though, is that life with Lexi is better than a fairy tale. It’s an incredible and original novel that I never want to end. I never know what the next chapter will hold, but that’s why I love it. Every day is just another page turned in our unpredictable, hilarious, and imperfect adventure.
