Leigh-Ann and Max

How We Met

So happy I swiped right… That’s right, we met on Tinder- and if you are anything like my mother, you immediately associate this with negative thoughts. It actually took two whole years to tell my mom, and for many of you this still may come as a surprise. However, if you are anything like Max and myself (and hundreds of other couples), then you know Tinder as a pretty great way to get into the dating scene- without having to actually go out. Regardless of how it makes anyone else feel, pressing the “install” button, and responding to a message that read “that’s a pretty cute dog you have there” were two of the best decisions I have ever made.

After some light chit chat about our pups, and my love for dogs in general- Max dove right in and asked to take me to lunch on Easter, April 5th, 2015. I of course did my due diligence and stalked all forms of his social media to find out what I had just gotten myself info, and although he may not admit it, Max did the same. We met at Authors in Hyde Park, and from the second our eyes met, I knew that this would not be my last time seeing Mr. Bortz. Max looked at me the way all girls dreamed of being looked at. When I took my sunglasses off after sitting down at our table, there was silence from both of us, staring at each other with giant grins was all we wanted to do/ could do in that moment. Both clearly infatuated with the other, our lunch conversation was easy. It was an afternoon full of talking about our families, friends, dogs, etc…. No awkward silences, just two people, thoroughly enjoying each others company. Once lunch was finished, we hugged goodbye and briefly mentioned getting together again, which in all honesty left me slightly confused after such a great date. My confusion didn’t last long, Max text me on his way home from lunch asking to see me again. My answer, of course, was yes! Our next few dates included some dinners, seeing The Lion King, and of course many visits to the dog park! It did’t take long for me to realize that he was my person.

Leigh-Ann's Proposal in Boca Grande, Florida

How He Asked

As the years rolled on, we went on a few vacations with my family- but our family trip to Boca Grande will always hold a special place in my heart… This trip seemed to be like any other vacation we took with my parents, very relaxed and casual. Each day was the same… wake up, drink coffee, lay on the beach, eat dinner, repeat. The day before Max proposed, he tricked me into thinking he forgot his chapstick (if you know max, you get it) at the house as soon as we got situated in our normal positions on the beach. With his chapstick actually in his pocket, Max headed back to the house to ask my dad for my hand in marriage. Both of my parents were on their way to the pool when they stumbled into Max, and were thrilled to find out exactly what he was up to.

On August 8th, 2018 I woke up to a different vibe in our beach house. Everyone was up walking around, opposed to leisurely drinking their coffee. My mom was running in circles, which is pretty normal, but something was definitely different. And although it seemed everyone was in some type of hurry- it also felt that everyone was also waiting on something. My parents finally left for their normal beach walk, and Max continued to “get ready” for our walk on the beach, which seemed odd. I was getting bored- so I pushed him to get moving.

We started our walk on the beach, SLOWLY. Max was walking the speed of a sloth, and I kept asking “why so slow?!”, he would constantly give me the response of “I’m just looking at all this stuff that washed up from the storm last night”…. to which I would eventually respond… “what stuff?!”.

By the time I finally asked, we were approaching a green class bottle- slightly buried in the sand. As Max walked toward the bottle, I started to think of a million things at once- and began to fear that the bottle belonged to someone else. Mex started to open the bottle and I became less resistant, he pulled a letter out of the bottle and handed it to me. I started to unroll the letter, and saw my name at the top, which lead me to TOTALLY forget how to read! As I stumbled through the note, the realization of what was happening became clear. Max was waiting on one knee with the ring, and proceeded to ask if I would spend the rest of my life with him. I said a lot of things I can’t remember, but most importantly I said YES!!
