Lei and Josh
How We Met
To celebrate my birthday, my friends and I went out for the night. Josh and his battle buddies had just come back from deployment in Afghanistan and decided to go out in celebration for their first weekend back stateside.
I’m not one to make new friends on a night out, so you can imagine my surprise when I wake up to a text/phone call the next morning explaining who he was and if I’d like to go out with him sometime. (I’m convinced one of my friends gave him my number with good intentions, although no one will admit to anything.) Initially, I decided against giving him a chance, but with some luck on his side and some peer pressure from mine, I decided to give him ONE date.
He took me out to dinner, a walk on the beach, and a movie. It was wonderful, but I had my doubts about the struggles of dating someone in the military. So, I kept him at friends length, but he wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. Everyday for a month-and-a-half, he would ask me if I would give him a ‘real’ chance. I eventually did and haven’t regretted it since.
How He Asked
For my birthday, Josh took me out to a fancy dinner that overlooked the beach. We talked. We laughed. Everything was going great. Afterwards, we drove to the other side of the island to the beach where we had our first date. I was walking in front of him heading towards the shoreline, and as I turned around mid-sentence he was down on one knee with the ring in his hand. Honestly, I don’t remember much of what he said. I do remember his handsome face smiling, lots of hugging, laughing, and him putting the ring on my finger. It was perfect.
