How We Met

So it was October 20th, 2011 and I had just finished a full day of classes at Auburn University. I had a friend that was going to volunteer for a concert that was in town for the night at the Auburn Arena with Casting Crowns, Sanctus Real and The Afters (which, side note, I had no idea was going on that night in the first place). I ended up getting a phone call that afternoon asking if I could take my friends place at the concert, because she was feeling too sick to go. So I did. As I walked in, one of the first things that caught my eye was this cute guy across the hall. While I was getting assigned to a merchandise table, he was getting all the other tables ready for the show (while rocking his straightened black hair and fedora might I add). My friend and I ended up working the CD table and during my entire time there, I was more focused on coming up with any reason to talk to that cute merch guy that I saw right when I walked in more than I was selling CD’s…ooops. But ya know….just asking normal questions like, “What do your tattoos mean? Have you been here before? Are we doing everything okay? Can we help you clean up after? (yeah…I thought I was being super smooth). Come to find out later, that he had been having all the same thoughts as me that day, trying to find excuses to talk to me, taking the stairs instead of the elevator because they were closer to where I was and trying to be super smooth.

But anyway, sparing lots of details, we ended up getting each other’s contact info and talking every night for at least 7 hours each night after that (and by contact info, i mean Facebook chat haha). Following that, I came to a few more shows, where we finally exchanged phone numbers (big deal y’all), I saw Tyler a few more times after that and we always made it a point to stay in touch with each other whenever we were able (considering I was in Alabama and he was in Michigan/always on the road, it wasn’t really an option to call up the other to go catch a movie or something—but don’t worry, that awkward movie “date” did eventually happen, haha). But anyway, communicating via text and Facebook and the occasional phone call was what our friendship looked like for a whole year. On September 12, 2012, right after I met Tyler at a show in Atlanta (where we were wearing matching green skinny jeans might I add), Tyler finally asked me to be his girlfriend! (Cue my happy dance). We did that super fun long distance thing for about 3 years and it was not always easy, but I believe every second of it helped us grow into the couple we are today. The funny thing about that first day was…I was wearing a shirt that was probably a 10 on the cheesy scale…but even so..it was right. On October 20, 2011, my shirt read “God is writing my love story” and six years later, I get to marry that cute guy I spotted across the hall. Who would have guessed.

How He Asked

At a waterfall in Rock Island, TN – four words made me the happiest girl in the entire world. Early that morning Tyler had texted me “want to go on a waterfall adventure today?”. With my response being “duh”, we packed a lunch, hopped in the car and drove almost 2 hours. Once we got there, we parked and realized there was an amazing waterfall right next to us, all you had to do was walk down a flight of stairs to stand right in front of it.

But we thought…there’s no way this is the waterfall we were thinking of because you must have to hike or something right? So…we started our hike the opposite direction. Fast forward to wrong turns, me falling, falling again and almost getting pulled down the river, we finally made it to another waterfall. But…it was the wrong one. So we decided to treat ourselves to our packed lunch, watch some kids jump into the water and just sit and relax. After a while we decided it was time to hike back and go to the waterfall we were next to at the very beginning (the right one).

At this point, I’m thinking there is no way he’s proposing today.. I’m sweaty, I’ve put my hat on, we’re tired…just no way. Once we got down to the right waterfall, we sat on a rock and Tyler said he had made me something *cue Lauren panic mode”. So he reached in his backpack and grabbed a frame that inside he had written “I choose you forever”.

Well you can guess that at this point my heart is about to explode out of my chest. He proceeds to ask if I can stand up and he follows. As I’m saying his name over and over again and he is trying to calm me down, he gets down on one knee (which is actually quite difficult on a bunch of uneven rocks- who knew). He takes my hand and tells me that he’s been waiting for this moment with me for a long time and asks me the four best words I could ever hear “will you marry me?” /// may•25•2017 can’t come soon enough.
