Lauren and Scooby
How We Met
Scooby and I met during spring break of my sophomore year of college. I came home to LA for the week and as fate would have it I randomly met the love of my life who had moved to LA a few years prior, following his graduation from college. We went out for dinner before my spring break ended and said we’d keep in touch, but given that I went to school in Spokane, Washington we were both discouraged by the idea of starting a relationship that would have to be long distance for at least a year and a half (until I finished school).
After a few too many sleepless nights I told Scooby that I would be studying abroad in Florence, Italy that summer- another card in the deck that I thought was stacked against us. Much to my surprise, Scooby asked if I wanted to keep in touch while I was abroad. Obviously I said yes, and expected to have an on again off again type of cyber relationship during my time abroad. 8 weeks later, my time in Florence came to an end and Scooby and I had talked almost every day that I was away. With a few weeks of getting back we “officially” started dating, and the rest is history.
I went back to school that fall with a heavy heart knowing that I wasn’t going to be seeing my boyfriend nearly as much as I would have liked but Scooby’s freelance job allowed him to visit frequently and I came home from school every opportunity that I could. I managed to load myself up with a few extra classes each semester and graduated early. In December 2015 I moved home to Los Angeles and started my post-grad life with my family, friends, and the love of my life.
How He Asked
Scooby is the best at surprises- always has been and I’m betting always will be. Whenever anyone we knew got engaged with their friends and family around he would make a point to remind me that he thought a proposal should be private, just between the two people getting engaged. As two people who are incredibly close to our own (and each other’s) families, I understood where he was coming from but also secretly really wanted to be surrounded by our family and friends when that special moment came to be. Every August, my family takes a trip to Pismo Beach, California. It’s a really special trip that has always been a part of my life, and our 2017 trip was shaping up to be the best year yet!
Scooby’s parents had signed on to join us on the beach trip this year which was really exciting. A few days before we left, I was surprised to find Scooby’s little brother had flown into town to join us on the trip as well! I was super excited to have Scooby’s family join us on the trip, and I wasn’t suspecting any sort of proposal given how well Scooby had convinced me that he didn’t want our engagement to be a big “public” thing. The joke was on me- within 20 minutes of arriving at the hotel Scooby and I were walking down to the beach when he pulled me aside on a cliff overlooking the ocean and asked me the easiest question that I’ve ever answered. I honestly don’t remember much of what he said (all I remember is sobbing hysterically). He held me tight, got down on one knee and gave me the most beautiful ring that I have ever seen.
As if that wasn’t perfect enough, we walked back up to the hotel and all of our family and friends were there waiting to celebrate with champagne and charcuterie. We then enjoyed 5 perfect days at the beach surrounded by the most important people in our lives. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect way to begin this new chapter in our relationship. It was the most wonderfully overwhelming and love filled 5 days of our lives and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We chose not to post anything on social media about our engagement until we got back from our trip which I have to say was probably one of the best ideas we have ever had.
We were able to be fully present with our family and friends who had come together to celebrate our engagement and enjoy a beautiful family vacation together. We weren’t worried about checking our phones or posts constantly and we were able to call our friends and family members who couldn’t be there, to personally tell them about our engagement before announcing it to the world. It was a magical start to a new chapter in our relationship and I can’t wait to see what our future together will bring.
