Lauren and Sam's Proposal to Earth, Wind, and Fire's "September"

How we met: Two years ago, I saw Sam sitting alone at Yom Kippur service. I had a boyfriend at the time but thought he could be a good prospect for my best friend so I asked him to sit with us. At the end of services he gave me his card under the auspices of advertising his shoe brand, Jacques Levine, on my company’s website, and luckily I held onto it for safe keeping. A few months later, once my previous relationship fizzled, I went searching for the card of the cute guy I met at Yom Kippur. A first date led to a second date, and we have been together ever since.

How he asked: Lauren’s favorite song is ‘September’ by Earth, Wind and Fire. In fact, Sam often teased Lauren about her taste in music being similar to a bat mitzvah playlist! Sam was initially planning to propose in December so he put this all together just two days before.

Sam’s mother brought him his grandmother’s ring on the Tuesday before the proposal with the plan of giving Lauren’s father (a jeweler) the ring the next week during a family vacation. But when Lauren forwarded Sam an email about Earth Wind and Fire on September 19, the idea was born.

Sunday morning Sam and Lauren were hanging out in the living room about to sit down to have coffee and watch TV. As Lauren was about to sit down she said to Sam, “We can’t watch TV, there is a band in the backyard!” And he brushed it off by saying he forgot to tell Lauren about a birthday party in the building. But all of a sudden the band started playing September. It took Lauren a couple of seconds to realize what was going on and as she turned around, Sam had pulled the ring out of his pocket and was down on one knee asking, “will you marry me?”
