Lauren and Paul's Engagement in Fort Foster, Kittery, Maine

How We Met

P and I first met on my college recruiting trip for swimming. He was actually one of the first people I met at the party we went to that first night. I remember that he was very welcoming and fun and just so easy to talk to, he clearly made a lasting impression on me. After that weekend spent at the University of Rhode Island in March 2011, I made my commitment to URI and their swim team. That next fall, I started my freshman year and on my first night of college, I ran into P again. The men’s swim team were having a fundraiser and my friend paid to pie him in the face. A few days later the semester was finally in session and the training began for the URI swim team. Come to find out, P was one of the men’s senior team captains. The year went by we began getting closer as not only teammates, but friends.

That spring 2012, P graduated as a mechanical engineer and quickly got a job in Maine, where I am originally from. With many trips home to Maine from Rhode Island, it just made sense to stop by and see him, “because it was on the way.” This lead to something more than I could have ever imagined.

How He Asked

It was a warm Sunday in October so P suggested we take our dog, Oakley, for a walk. I instantly agreed and recommended we go to Fort Foster in Kittery, Maine. Once we got there we walked around the trails and had our usual conversations, laughs and played with Oakley. P brought his camera because he wanted to take a family photo of the three of us; it also just so happened to be Oakley’s first birthday. After a few trial runs, P turned and said “ok one more.” He pressed the button on his camera and ran over next to me, I smiled at the camera and the next thing I knew, I looked over and P was down on one knee, asking me to be his wife. Tears of joy and surprise were rolling down my face. It was the easiest YES I have ever said! It is amazing he was able to capture this moment that we will cherish forever!!
