Lauren and Joey
How We Met
Joey and I met eight years ago when we were lucky enough to be placed in the same eighth grade study hall. We clicked instantly. I thought he was adorable and I quickly found out he had a personality and sense of humor to match. He asked me out at one of his football games which he must have been dead set on since he hung around with a broken collar bone (unknown to me) just so he could. I’m convinced he was trying to impress me.
Since I was thirteen I was lucky enough to have him by my side. From braces, to drivers licenses, to high school (and middle school) dances, college applications, first jobs, dorm rooms, first apartment and all of the struggles and successes along the way, he has been by my side. We were even named class couple our senior year! I have been lucky enough to have the invaluable opportunity to grow alongside my soulmate. It has been incredible knowing I have someone I can always count on and I could not have asked for a more caring, loving, supporting and selfless best friend.
How He Asked
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge Elvis fan. My mom took me to Graceland for my birthday and I loved it so much I was elated when Joey said he would like to go for his birthday. My parents planned Joey a birthday trip and I was excited to be going back to Memphis. When my uncle and aunts said they were going I didnt’ think anything of it, after all who wouldn’t want to see the King’s castle. We had a great first night in Memphis enjoying the brand new, beautiful hotel. The next morning I put on a dress Joey and my mom had helped me pick out (I was told my mom wanted some good pictures of Joey and I) and we set off for what I thought was going to be a normal tour of the mansion. When we went to pick up our passes, we were told there was a mixup. To make up for it we would be meeting with someone who would ensure that we were personally escorted onto our tour. We were told we could check out the wedding chapel on the Graceland property while we waited for our vehicle that was to take us to the tour.
Thinking back, I should have known something was up the moment I walked in the door. “Can’t Help Falling in Love” was playing (our song, my personal favorite Elvis song and the one Joey sang to me in the middle of our high school class to ask me to prom) and the aisle was lined with lit candles and rose petals. Joey tried to lead me down the aisle, but oblivious, I did not want to step on the petals as I thought they were for someone else! When he grabbed my hands and began to tell me what I mean to him, I finally understood what was happening. When he opened the ring box, I realized that my best friend was proposing to me with my grandmothers ring, making it even more meaningful. I couldn’t believe it. He even brought me (with the help of my family) a bouquet of my favorite flowers, Gerbera Daisies.
We then had the rest of the weekend to celebrate in the birthplace of rock and roll. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect proposal.
