Lauren and Andrew

Lauren's Proposal in Where we fell in love, his family home.

How We Met

Summer lovin’, had me a blast
Summer lovin’, happened so fast
Met a girl crazy for me
Met a boy cute as can be
Summer days drifting away
To, uh oh, those summer nights

Our journey began on a summer night, in fact, it started on a very special summer evening, Andrew’s 22nd Birthday. From that moment, we were truly inseparable. Andrew invited a close group of friends over to celebrate and my childhood best friend invited me to come along, as she was dating one of his buddies, at the time. Oddly, despite sharing the same hometown and countless mutual friends, we had never met or even heard of one another. I always tease Andrew that I am glad we never met in high school, otherwise, we would have despised one another. He was a bit of a party goer and I was as straight laced as can be. When we finally did meet, he left quite an impression on me, due to that fact that, as I reached out my hand to shake his, he gave me a big smile and said, “we don’t shake hands, we hug here.” Needless to say, we were instantly attracted to one another. We spent the balance of the night bonding over whooping everyone in beer pong, as we are both competitive, as well as sharing great conversation and laughs with our best friends. To this day, he always tells me that I am the best Birthday present he ever received. Many of my friends ask me, when did you know that you two had something special? Honestly, it was that night. Never in my life had someone made me feel more comfortable with who I am. I did not need to pretend to be something I was not. I did not need to put on a show. Andrew is the type of person that makes you feel at home; he is genuine and kind. After his Birthday, we spent almost every single day that Summer together, swimming, golfing, playing tennis, eating bagels, and learning about one another. By the end of the Summer, Andrew had transferred schools to Indiana University, Bloomington, where we started the next chapter of our relationship, which is a story for another day.

How He Asked

Two years ago, Andrew and I moved from Indiana to Florida, to begin our careers, and this was our very first time home for the holidays. He patiently waited to propose in a place filled with family, friends, and those we love the most. He proposed to me at his Father’s house, the place that we spent our first Summer together falling in love, the place where it all began. On the evening of December 23rd, my brother dropped my off at Andrew’s Father’s house, Christmas goodies in my hands, shouting at Andrew to come help me, I opened the front door and walked into the dimly lit living room, scattered with dozens of candles and a crackling fire in the background. I instantly started crying. He started choke up. It was a moment we had both waited for so long. Once he mustered up enough strength and calmed his nerves, he asked me to be his girlie forever and I, without hesitation, said “yes,” a million times. We spent the next minutes celebrating over a glass of champagne, however, the surprise was not over. Nearby, all of our closest friends and family were waiting at a nearby restaurant for Andrew’s response. Within twenty minutes, the house was filled with all of the people that we hold near and dear to our hearts. The rest of the night, we spent with everyone celebrating over our favorite Pizza in South Bend, Rocco’s, and loads of champagne. It was a night I will cherish in my heart for the rest of my life.

P.S. It almost didn’t happen! Andrew had the ring shipped from the Jeweler to our home in Florida, but it arrived a week late, the day after we left to go home to Indiana! OMG. Andrew said he stalked the mail man for a week straight. He had to covertly give one of his co-workers our mail key, who then fished it out of our mail box and then flew the ring back to the Midwest on his way home for the holidays. The day Andrew asked me, he had to drive two hours, up to Michigan with his best buddy, Chris, to retrieve the ring from his co-worker. Without the help of our friends and family, this day would truly not have been possible.
