Laura and Brandon
How We Met
Brandon and I met through a mutual friend, Blake, in June of 2011. I was attending college at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas where I became best friends with Blake. Blake pretty regularly told me about his friend Brandon that I needed to meet, but I kept refusing because Brandon had a motorcycle and I wanted nothing to do with a boy who drove a motorcycle. Eventually I gave in to Blake and the three of us went out one night to some local bars. Brandon and I hit it off and have been together ever since!
How He Asked
My birthday was back in September and Brandon gave me plane tickets to NYC. I have an intense love affair with NYC and hadn’t been in about a year and was starting to seriously miss it. I was extremely excited about this trip not only because I love the city, but because this was our first vacation together alone after dating for 4-1/2 years. We arrived in NYC on Thursday, October 22. My cousin, Justin, works for Amazon in NYC so after he got off work on Thursday, we met up for a few drinks at a local bar. He invited us to an event he was having on Friday for some potential clients. We agreed to go and have a few drinks while out and about exploring the city. He told us he couldn’t remember the address but would send it to us later and let us know what time to meet there. Later that night, he sent me a text message telling us to be at 620 5th Avenue Loft and Garden at 11:15am. I thought that this place sounded familiar so I googled it. I couldn’t believe my eyes… turns out I was very familiar with this venue as I had found it on Pinterest and was in love with it. (I also showed it to Brandon and he made note of the location… he’s a keeper, for sure!) The building is owned by the Rockefeller Center and is a venue they rent out. There is a beautiful garden on the roof which is diagonal from Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. It is seriously something out of a dream. I somehow didn’t think anything about this was weird, I was just too excited to actually see this place with my own eyes. So come Friday at 11:05am, we walk into the building and tell the woman working that we were there to meet Justin for the Amazon event. Her and a security guard took us up an elevator and I joked about feeling super important because we had a personal escort (little did I know, I was pretty important on this day). As soon as you step off the elevator you look out these doors to the garden. I’ve never seen a more magical place in my life, and I doubt I ever will. There were no people around, but we were a few minutes early and I was so taken back by the beauty of this place that I didn’t pay much attention. We walked straight out to the corner of the garden to admire Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. It took my breath away, I couldn’t believe that something like this even existed. After a few minutes we walked back into the center of the garden in front of this small pool they have, and Brandon turned to me and said “I don’t think Justin is coming.” That is when I saw him reach into his coat pocket and pull out a little blue box with a perfectly tied white bow on the top of it. He dropped down onto one knee and said, “Will you spend the rest of your life with me?” I began sobbing, pretty much uncontrollably. My legs quit working and I fell down onto my knees. I gave him a kiss and told him yes. That is when I heard a very distinctive laugh somewhere to my left and I froze. I asked Brandon, “Is that Jenna?” (Jenna is my very best friend). He shook his head yes. I turned and there was Jenna along with three of my other best friends, my parents and Brandon’s parents. I almost hyperventilated. I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t stop crying, I was in complete shock. It was seriously a fairy tale and I couldn’t believe it was happening to me. Brandon of course hired a professional photographer who was there to capture the whole thing. We were at the venue for about an hour and we got to have a champagne toast and take lots of beautiful pictures. After that we got to spend the weekend celebrating with our loved ones. It was, hands down, the most magical moment of my life and nothing will ever top it.
