Laken and Nico

How We Met

Nico and I met in 2008 when we were in the 8th grade at the local ice skating rink, although he claims he knew of me in 7th grade (we went to different jr. high schools). Over the next two years our paths crossed a few different times, and there were even a couple times Nico tried to “talk to me” ( I wanted nothing to do with him). Our paths officially came together the first day of 10th grade, when he sat in front of me in history and was in my chemistry class. When my mother asked how my first day of high school went, the first thing I said was, “Nico sits right in front of me. This is going to be the worst year ever.” As the school year continued, Nico, being the persistent person he is, kept trying to talk to me. Eventually, I let my walls down, and Nico swept me off my feet at just 15 years old. We began officially dating on January 9, 2010.

How He Asked

Nico and I planned to study abroad in Italy summer of 2015. It just so happened that our 2 separate programs and 2 different universities were both providing study abroad trips to Italy. We knew it was meant to be, so we both decided to go for it. I was going to be in Italy for the entire month of May. Nico would come to Italy the last 5 days of may, and stay until mid July. We decided before going that we were going to meet up in the town Nico was staying, and travel to Rome together. While I was in Italy, Nico sent my parents on an anonymous date night scavenger hunt. The final location was my parents house, where Nico had prepared them dinner, and asked my parents for my hand in marriage. Once we meet and traveled to Rome, we went site seeing all day on a vespa. I was already living my child hood Lizze McGuire movie dream (riding on the back of a vespa with a cute boy in Rome), and didn’t think the day could get any better. Towards the evening, we went to the Villa Borghese Gardens. It was there, where Nico got down on one knee in front of a gorgeous lake and temple. I actually don’t remember what happened after that. Luckily enough, Nico hired an Italian photographer to capture the moments. We also had an hour engagement photo shoot session after the proposal. We ended the night at  the most romantic restaurant called Casina Valadier, which over looked the Vatican. It was the most perfect day. I still til this day can’t get over how lucky I am to have someone to do all of this just because he loves me.
