Laina and Cody
How We Met
Cody and I met at his best friend Tony’s birthday party at Spirit Mountain Casino. I had just moved into town from Idaho 7 days prior, therefore I didn’t know very many people. My friend Erica is actually the one that called me and invited me to the party.
It was my first time really gambling and I didn’t know what I was doing. I was watching this older man play blackjack and I watched him win over $200 in one hand! Cody was watching me the entire time. He later on told me he couldn’t take his eyes off of me since he saw me walk in. Cody then approached me and asked me if I knew how to play blackjack, in which I replied that I didn’t, but it looks really fun.” He then offered to teach me how to play and handed me a stack of his own chips to learn with. The way he made me laugh, while losing a lot of his own chips still blows me away today. He was so sweet and caring and I could tell he was a good guy.
Just a short time later, after I lost all of his chips he asked me if I wanted to get a drink at the bar and get to know one and another. We talked that night like we were best friends and have known each other for years, and it was like some sort of reunion for us. There was a live band playing at the bar, and at the end of our 2 hour conversation. Cody stood up grabbed my hand, and asked me if I wanted to dance. As if I wasn’t swept off my feet already, he actually knew how to dance! Right away he was leading me in a salsa dance! Everyone at the bar at this time is watching us smiling and cheering us on. Codys spinning me around, dipping me, in front of everybody. Complete strangers and he didn’t have a care in the world. I spent the rest of the night, not more than 5 feet away from him. And was truly sad when Erica wanted to leave and head home. Like every girl, I thought Cody would never call me or even think of me again. But that very next day, Cody asked me out to dinner, and took me for a walk in the park at night. And we’ve been together ever since.
How He Asked
It all started on the morning of November 11th 2017, when I woke up to my boyfriend saying that I had a surprise gift waiting for me in Portland, and that we had to go pick it up. We dropped the kids off at Grandmas because he said my gift wouldn’t fit with kids in the car. (We just moved and I was thinking it could definitely be a couch). We drove about an hour to Portland and pulled into a huge parking garage. At this point I gave up guessing on what my surprise was. We get out of the car and walked straight into an elevator, and Cody said to me “Hold on, I have too make a phone call.” Out of nowhere the elevator starts moving up without any of buttons being touched. I looked at Cody in shock not knowing what is going on. The elevator comes to a stop, and the elevator doors open up. And we’re on top of the roof looking at the most beautiful city skyline and a helicopter waiting for the two of us to hop in and take a ride.
Still in shock, we finally get in and fly 700ft. high over the most beautiful city in Oregon. Together we soared through the deep woods, country side and city scenery, while falling more in love by sharing such a blissful moment together. The ride was almost at its end, and I was hoping to get some cool pictures/videos of the landing. I was snapping pictures left to right then… IT happened… Through my camera I saw two people holding up a huge banner where we were about to land, and printed on it said, “LAINA WILL YOU MARRY ME?” I turned around to look at Cody, and he was staring back at me with a huge smile on his face while holding up the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen and said “You are my best friend and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?”
I have never been so eager to say yes! After crying my lashes off, I finally was able to take everything in and take some pictures of our engagement! The Staff and Owner Robert Walker of Oregon Helicopters went above and beyond to make this fairy tale come true.
