How We Met

It was October of 2011. I was newly single and a Junior in College. While making plans for the weekend, my friend suggested that I should go to a party at their house that weekend. I was hesitant, but intrigued. After asking if there were going to be “any cute guys there?” she replied that Brent (whom I had met once before and found very attractive) was going to be there and that he liked me! As soon as I arrived to their house that weekend, he walked up to me and greeted me warmly with a big hug, and we were almost inseparable ever since. By January of 2012 we were officially dating, by April we were moving in together, and six years later, we’re now engaged to be married.

How He Asked

Our six year anniversary was approaching, but I was going to be out of town on business on our actual date. I was so bummed about it, so my fiancé and I decided to celebrate the weekend before I left. We chose to take a trip to one of my favorite nature spots that I took him to when we first started dating since we hadn’t been there in a few years. It was a cold January day, but the sun was shining bright so it was still perfect weather for a short hike to my favorite ocean view. When we arrived, it was clear we weren’t the only ones with that idea. I was disappointed to see so many cars around (and little did I know my fiancé was feeling the same way.) As we made our way through the woods, we passed multiple people leaving the area where we were heading. When we arrived to the end point, we were surprised to see that there was no one else around! We stood there together, telling each other how much we loved each other and hugging while the cold wind whipped around us. Since it was freezing, I asked Brent for just one more moment for me to appreciate the view before we left. As I turned around to leave, he was waiting behind me on one knee and asked if I would marry him. After falling to my knees as well, laughing, hugging, and crying, I exclaimed, “of course, I will!” We collected ourselves and started to leave when a fellow hiker came up the steps. I excitedly took the opportunity to ask her if she would mind taking our picture as we just got engaged. She happily obliged and so the picture below was born. Little did we know is that another photographer had also been in the area. As we returned to our car, a woman approached us and explained that she stumbled upon the proposal as she was trying to get some landscape shots and captured a few of us. I was beaming with excitement that she was able to do so and so glad she took the time to wait for us to let us know. It couldn’t have worked out more perfect!
