Kristy and David
How We Met: I first met David when I was out with my friends for a girls night out at a country line dancing bar called “The Stampede” in Old Town Temecula. I always say that we met in a serendipitous way because I almost did not go out that night (It was a Thursday night) and he was on his way out when he noticed me. Also, this was the first time either of us had been there.
Anyways, he was on his way out with his brothers, sister, and a few friends when he noticed me from across the room (I am 5’11 so I’ve never really blended in). He asked if I wanted to do the Can Can dance because the song came on, so I laughed and reluctantly went on the dance floor. He asked me “How much a polar bear weighs”, which completely went over my head so I just smiled and laughed nervously.
My friend interjected with “enough to break the ice” and he looked embarrassed because it was directed at me. We continued talking for the next 5 minutes and I was smitten. He asked for my phone number and said he wanted to meet again.
We texted later that night and he called me the next day saying that he would love to take me out. He picked me up at my house and we had dinner at Panera Bread and talked for hours. We finished the night off miniature golfing and getting slushies at Sonic. I was smitten with his sweetness and sense of humor.
Before we kissed later that night I knew I wanted him in my life in some way or another. He told me that he didn’t know how he convinced a girl like me to go out with a guy like him. When all I could think was that I never thought anyone like him existed, someone who had everything I wanted and then some. That night changed my life forever and we’ve been happily together for 4 years next month!
How He Asked: On Saturday April 18th of this year my parents, sister, and now fiance decided to go visit the Carlsbad Flower Fields. It is only open a few months annually so we were excited to go and experience the nearly 50 acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers. We’re pretty in tune with each other’s emotions and he seemed a little off I could tell because he was stress eating a bag of kettlecorn so I asked if he was okay and he said yea I’m just hungry.
So I brushed it off and maybe 30 minutes later we were walking through the fields again and he was acting weird, I’m used to him being so calm and cool all the time so I wasn’t sure what was causing this. He was walking fast ahead of me to get to the center walkway of the flower fields and I said “Hey slow down, what’s the rush” and slid my finger into his front small coin pocket of his pants to slow him down. In that moment I instantly regretted what I did I felt the ring in his pocket.
He didn’t notice but I can’t keep that kind of secret so I told him and was really sad because I just ruined my own surprise. He was really bummed too and told me it’s okay there will be plenty more opportunities, you’ll just have to wait (which is not something I like to do). We tried to brush it off and had my sister take a few more pictures of us.
He asked my sister and mom to step back a maybe 15 feet so we could get a picture of the whole flower fields in the background. I could feel his hand trembling on my back and the next thing I knew he gets down on one knee and says “This wasn’t what I originally planned but sometimes the best things in life are things you can’t plan but things you can’t stop from happening” but I know I want to spend the rest of my life with you and meeting you is the best thing that has ever happened to me, you’re the most amazing woman and I can’t imagine a single day without you” in excitement I interrupted and said YESS!
… oh wait ask me first and we both laughed and he asked if I would marry him . I was so excited and happy because I thought I had just ruined my surprise earlier and would have to wait longer. The proposal was a surprise to my parents and sister because he had told them he was going to wait until his birthday (which was a month away at the time).
My dad was out of breathe running up the hill to congratulate us and my mom and sister were just far enough away that we could have our intimate moment to share our feelings but they were still close enough to share in the moment.
