Kristina and Stephen

How We Met

I’ll never forget that moment when I looked up and saw Stevie for the first time. I was working as a cocktail waitress at Avenue, an upscale lounge down the Jersey Shore. I walked into the restaurant, champagne in hand, ready to deliver to a customer when I saw him looking at me. He was so handsome! He still is. I remember thinking, “oh em gee” but strutted by, keeping my cool. Within the next 15 minutes, he introduced himself. We talked all night, regardless of the fact that I was working. As a cocktail waitress, you meet a lot of men who ask for your numbers. I thought it was hilarious to continuously give them my sister’s or best friend’s numbers. It always amused me. But that night, before Stevie could even ask me for my phone number, I had it written on a piece of paper for him. He texted me within 5 minutes of leaving the restaurant and we were on our first date a few days later. Steve swears we met because of the movie “Yes Man.” He was lying in bed watching it when his friend called to ask him if we wanted to go out that night. He had no desire to go but couldn’t get Jim Carrey’s message out of his head and said YES. Steve and I had a whirlwind romance. It all happened so quickly.

On our third date, he took my little brother and me to Six Flags and came over for dinner afterward to meet my parents. I was excited and slightly nervous, mostly because he was wearing sweatpants when meeting my parents for the first time, but I couldn’t stop smiling. I knew they would love him! After only a month of knowing each other, we traveled to Italy together for three weeks. Traveling is probably the quickest way to know whether you’re truly compatible with someone. You learn very quickly whether you want to be with them or push them off the cliff. Despite a minor ATV accident that almost sent us off the cliff (whoops my bad), our private boat losing it’s anchor (still don’t understand how that happened), and me getting sick with pink eye (I looked like a one-eyed monster), we had the most incredible time. Stevie was a keeper. A year later I woke up one morning and said let’s move to Los Angeles; he was down. We packed our bags and headed out west just a few weeks later. It’s been an adventure since the day we met, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. He is my best friend, my biggest supporter, and I couldn’t be more excited to call him my future husband!

How He Asked

It was our six year anniversary of the day we met, and Stevie and I celebrated by taking a weekend trip to Coronado, an island right off of San Diego. The night of our actual anniversary, Stevie surprised me with a sailboat ride around Coronado Bay and the San Diego harbor. The only thing we love more than each other, our families and our dog, is the water. Can you imagine my excitement?! A sunset sail, my handsome man, and delicious red wine?! It was perfect. During the boat ride, Stevie suggested we sit in the very front of the boat. So I sat in his arms, watching the sunset, cruising around the harbor. He began recounting our love story and telling me how he felt about me and whispered in my ears, “I love you.” I remember getting chills. We say I love you all day long, but this time it was different. I span around with tears in my eyes and ALL THE FEELS. HE WAS SO NERVOUS when he asked, “Will you marry me?” and it was so sweet. By big confident man, never looked more vulnerable and just like that, I fell in love all over again. I was able to stop crying to say “yes,” and we sat there, together, for the rest of the sail ride overwhelmed with happiness. We didn’t tell any family or friends until the next day because we wanted to enjoy the night, just the two of us. It was probably the most intimate experience I ever had, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
