Kristina and Chet
How We Met
Chet and I both come from a small town outside of Madison, Wisconsin. We both went to the same schools, but him being 3 and a half years older than I am, we never were actually in the same school at the same time. I went into my freshman year of high school the year after Chet graduated. It wasn’t until the summer after my freshman year of college at a mutual friend’s wedding that we met up, and we really hit it off. Chet and I spent the whole night dancing, drinking, and celebrating our friends, and at the end of the night, we exchanged phone numbers. The days spent after that were filled with flirtatious texting. We both knew there was something special there! We finally started “officially” dating on July 14th, 2014, and have been together ever since!
How He Asked
Chet had planned a trip for him and I to our favorite place, Door County, Wisconsin, for our 3 year anniversary. After a super crazy first half of the summer, we both were so ready to go on our vacation (for very different reasons, apparently)!
On Friday morning, we woke up and I was ready to go right away. Chet was being SO slow, and I was getting so antsy to get to my favorite place! Usually when we leave for trips, it’s the other way around- Chet is the one making sure I’m ready to go and pulling me out the door. The fact that he was dragging his feet should have been my first clue that something was up, but I was so excited that I never stopped to think about why he was acting so strange. We took our time on our 3 and a half hour drive, stopping for breakfast and other little detours along the way (again- not like Chet to take unplanned stops. Another red flag missed by me!). When we finally got to Door County, Chet insisted that we stop for a drink. I was totally down for that since Door County has the best cherry wine in the entire world. While we were at the bar, Chet was on his phone almost the entire time, while I was blabbering on about everything I wanted to do on our weekend getaway- go to our favorite winery, kayaking, swimming- and Chet was agreeing with everything I said (last red flag!).
When we finished our drinks, we took a walk on a beautiful pier in Ephraim, the cutest small town in Door County. We were looking at the water, walking along the pier, when he grabbed my hand and looked at me… He said “I can’t believe we’ve been together for 3 years, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” Then he pulled out the ring and got down on one knee, and of course I IMMEDIATELY started crying! He asked me to marry him and I said “OH MY GOD OH MY GOD WHAT ARE YOU DOING!” And then I finally remembered to say “YES!” After he put the most amazing ring on my finger, he told me to turn around, and both of our families were standing there! They saw the whole thing! That’s why Chet had been acting so strange and was taking his time throughout the day- he was making sure everything was going as planned and that everyone got there before us!
On the pier, there is a little art gallery that was closed at the time we were there. Chet had contacted the owner of the gallery, and the owner specially opened it up for our families to wait and hide inside so I wouldn’t see them until it was time! I found out this whole event took months of planning, and I never had even the slightest clue. We spent the rest of the weekend at a resort with both of our families, eating, drinking, and celebrating our future together! It was by far the most amazing day of my life!
