Kristen of Something New for I Do and Josh
How We Met: I remember the first time I saw him. He was working at a gym, and I was working at the adjoining spa. I walked into the gym one day while working, my eyes caught his, and I was immediately stunned by his handsomeness. After small talks here and there, I learned his name, Josh, as well as some other things about him. He was so genuinely sweet. Each time I worked, I secretly hoped he would be working too, just for the chance to see him.
Time went on and so did our friendly conversations. But suddenly, it was different. I could tell. The next time I saw him, he told me that he would love to take me out, and gave me his number. I texted him shortly after, but I got no reply. I waited about a week and then tried again… still nothing. A couple more weeks went by and I couldn’t get him off my mind. After some persuasion from my mom, I decided to try one last time and sent him a message through Facebook this time. Finally, I got a response, but it wasn’t at all what I expected. He told me that he was in a terrible car accident the week he gave me his number. He had been in the hospital all that time recovering. It was a miracle and a blessing that he survived.
We started talking that night and never stopped. It was Friday, November 4th, 2011 when we went on our first date. He picked me up at my house as nervous as could be as he had suffered some facial nerve damage in the accident and didn’t know how I would react seeing him for the first time. He said it was the most welcoming, warming smile that he walked into. We headed to Atlanta hand in hand for dinner at Two Urban Licks. The environment was fun, and the company was excellent. I remember how comfortable I felt as I let myself open up to him. After dinner, we had our first kiss on the balcony lit by the night sky and the city lights… it was perfect.
It didn’t take me long to fall for him. It was nearing Thanksgiving when we were out for lunch. We sat outside, the leaves changing colors and the most handsome man in front of me made the scenery beautiful. As we sat holding hands across the table, a woman with a camera asked us if she could take our picture for a project she was working on. She must have seen something in us, and I know what it was. It was on this very date that I remember noticing how I loved the feeling of my hand in his and his arms wrapped around me. I felt warm, safe, and I suddenly couldn’t picture myself without him. Only God knows why Josh was saved that night of the accident, but I like to think that He knew I needed him in my life. I am so blessed to have him and I can’t wait to become his wife and spend forever together.
How He Asked: Josh and I had the opportunity to tag along with his family to San Francisco during his dad’s work trip. They lived there at one time and frequently visit while his dad is there working, but I had never been. After telling me countless stories about their trips and all the places they wanted to someday take me, Josh said that the next time he went, he wanted it to be together so that he could share this place that was full of memories with me. We flew in on a Thursday, grabbed lunch in the city and caught an A’s game with his family in the evening. Josh’s best friend joined us later that night as his work allows him to travel during the weekends and he had also never been to San Francisco. Everyone kept talking about how they were so excited for the next night’s festivities because we were going to a restaurant that was quite sentimental to their family. Many memories were made there and they often celebrated various happenings as a family there. Little did I know, we were about to be celebrating another.
We arrived at Jupiter in Berkeley and waited for a table while relaxing in a beautiful garden patio listening to great music and drinking even better beer. While we were sitting at our table and waiting for some delicious pizzas (my favorite food), Josh starts one of his sweet speeches. I’m thinking he’s just caught up in the moment and happy to be at one of his favorite places with his favorite people. I’m just staring at him in awe of how compassionate he is about his loved ones and how lucky I am to be his girlfriend. The next thing I know, the speech changes directions and now he’s talking about me. He calls me Goose from Top Gun because he says I’m his copilot and help him navigate the car and life – and he loves my aviator sunglasses. He asks me to be his Goose forever, his wife. He asks me to marry him and I can barely wait for him to stop talking before I let out a squeal of a, “Yes!”
