Kristen and Stephen
How We Met
Stephen and I first met in high school through a mutual friend but we didn’t actually become part of each other’s lives until about 2 years later when my roommate brought me over to his apartment for their house warming party. I spent the entire night sitting on the couch talking to our friend and all of a sudden he turned around and said, “Oh. I didn’t realize you were still here.” I was basically mortified because I’d been sitting in the same spot all night. I’m pretty sure I told my mom he hated me, no big deal. Then about a month later my friends and I were hosting a July 4th party and we invited Stephen and his roommates. That night, we played several Disney movies and went back and forth asking each other questions about our lives, likes, and dislikes. By morning I felt like I’d known him forever and had almost completely forgotten the house warming party. I had to run to class but he said he would text me. It wasn’t until I’d gotten to school and was almost to class that I realized he didn’t have my phone number. Regardless he texted me about an hour later and the rest is history.
How He Asked
I have to preface this by telling you how he asked me to be his girlfriend. We had been hanging out a lot and texting almost constantly when we weren’t together and one night we were in a blanket fort and he turned to me and asked me if I “wanted to do this thing for real”. I, of course, said yes. So back in May I’d taken the day off work and the small town we live in has a small gathering downtown the first Friday of every month. Sometimes they have themes or drop giant pumpkins from a lift but there’s always vendors and all the shops downtown stay open a little later. Everyone kind of just walks around looking at everything for sale and spending time with friends and family. We walked around and looked at all of the tables and then decided to go to our favorite park (which is right down the street). In the park is a small beach on the Tennessee River where we just sat in the sand and watched the sun set. Afterwards we went to one of our favorite restaurants for dinner and split their Parmesan crusted chicken. That night we ate off the same plate and just sat there talking for what felt like forever and I remember thinking, “I really hope our life is like this forever.” We went home (possibly after going to Target because who can resist?!) and decided to watch a movie. We were laying in bed going through HBOGO trying to decide what to watch and he kept staring at me and he had this huge grin on his face. I asked him what he was thinking about and he said, “Honestly?” Of course! Our cat jumped up on the bed and he said, “If I had a ring right now, I’d ask you to marry me.” I was so happy and kind of stunned, we’d talked about getting married but it was always a far off vision. In that moment I didn’t care about that vision though or any plans we’d made as far as timing. I just knew it was right, so I told him to ask me. We decided to make a blanket fort and then he turned to me and said, “Later I’ll get you the ring of your dreams but do you want to do this for real?”
