Kristen and Rory
How We Met: I met Rory my freshmen year at UNC-Wilmington while Skyping a friend from high school who attended NC State University. In the middle of our conversation, Rory jumped in front of the camera, introduced himself, and asked for my number. At the time, I thought he was
crazy! I never would have imagined that we would grow so close as long distance friends.
Over the next year, I found myself frequently traveling up to Raleigh to visit NC State. Somewhere along the way, I fell in love with the university, and decided to transfer in the fall of my sophomore year. Rory and I remained close friends throughout our freshmen year of college, but it wasn’t until I was officially a member of the NCSU Wolfpack that he asked me to be his girlfriend. The rest is history!
How He Asked: Last year, Rory surprised me with a scuba certification class for our three year anniversary. Since then, we’ve had the opportunity to go on several dives off the coast of Florida together, but never one as exciting as our most recent dive on the Liberty Ship!
On July 11th, we traveled nearly eight miles offshore to a sunken WWII vessel accompanied by a group of our closest friends. Upon arriving at our destination, Rory seemed to be getting super nervous as he and his friends searched the water for the wreck itself. After 45 minutes, they finally located the dive site and we began to assemble our gear. By the time we made it into the water, I couldn’t wait to begin the dive, but Rory insisted we let his friends go first.
We floated on the surface for another 10 minutes until we finally received a signal from our friends below that we were all set to descend. Little did I know, Rory’s friends were busy helping him prepare for the biggest surprise of my life!
As we neared the bottom, I spotted a treasure box tied to our descent line. In retrospect, I can’t believe I didn’t realize what was about to happen, but I had no idea what it was doing there. Rory got down on one knee, opened the chest, and signaled for me to come closer. It wasn’t until I saw the note inside labeled “Marry me?” that I realized that this was my proposal!
My first instinct was to shout “YES!”, but I quickly realized that I wasn’t going to be able to say anything with a regulator in my mouth. I shook my head up and down, and Rory slid the most beautiful ring I have ever seen onto my finger. Once we surfaced, our friends were waiting for us on the boat cheering and holding bottles of celebratory champagne. I couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect day!
