Kristen and Mike
How We Met
Mike and I first met back in 2003 as freshmen in high school. I didn’t know many people in the school but quickly found a friend in Mike. He was smart, goofy and charming. We quickly became close friends and a couple months later he asked me to be his girlfriend. I said no. We were leaving class one day and he said “Hey Kristen, I’m single. You want to change that?”. Can you blame me for turning him down?
He didn’t take it to heart. We stayed good friends throughout the years as high school went on. Afterwards, I went away to college and he stayed home to attend a local college. We kept in touch and would see each other occasionally when I was home for the holidays. I moved back to Staten Island in 2011. A year later, in May 2012, I was leaving work one day and felt my phone going off. It was Mike texting me to say hey. We texted for a while and he asked when I would be moving home. I then told him I had been back for a year. We lived 5 minutes away from each other yet he had no idea I was back.
Shortly after that, we started hanging out regularly and instantly knew we were supposed to be more than friends. He asked me to be his girlfriend again on July 16, 2012. This time, I said yes!
We began dating and knew this was it. He would tell all of my friends how he knew I was the girl he was going to marry.
We moved into our first apartment together in June 2015. He had always told me he wouldn’t propose until he knew we could live together. A couple months after moving in together we got a puppy, which completed our little family.
How He Asked
Fast forward to Christmas of 2015. We always spoil each other with great Christmas gifts (probably a little too much!). We’re standing in our apartment and I have tons of bags and boxes for Mike, but I don’t see anything for me. I let him open all of his gifts and then he tells me he has a surprise for me! He walks me into the bedroom with my eyes closed. He then tells me to open my eyes and I see his laptop sitting in the middle of the bed with the screen open. I walk over to it and he presses “Play”. All of a sudden the Dropkick Murphy’s song “Shipping Up To Boston” starts playing along with a PowerPoint presentation (Mike is an IT guy so it was definitely fitting for him to tell me this way). He had booked us a trip to Ireland!! We had always talked about going to Ireland some day and now he had booked us a 10 day vacation there to see the whole country! It was a dream come true and I cried for about 2 hours afterwards. I also watched the PowerPoint presentation over and over all day because I just couldn’t believe it!
We left for Ireland on April 12, 2016. We took a late flight so that we would arrive in the morning. We landed in Dublin and headed straight to the hotel. Upon arriving at the hotel, we were told it was too early to check in but that we could leave our things there and go out to explore the city. We left the hotel and headed to an area downtown to grab some food and do some shopping. We hadn’t slept at all on the plane and were absolutely exhausted. I kept telling Mike how I thought he was acting strange but he just insisted that he was tired. Little did I know how this day would turn out!
Later that afternoon, after checking into our hotel and after sending Mike out into the streets of Dublin to try to find me a new hair straightener (the outlets fried mine as soon as I plugged it in), we left for the Jameson Distillery. After doing the tour, we hopped in a cab without a plan. There was a castle nearby that we told the cab driver to take us to but by the time we got over there, they had closed the grounds for the day. Mike asked the cab driver if there were any other “romantic” places we could go to walk around, explaining that it was our first day in Ireland.
The cab driver took us to a beautiful park in the middle of Dublin called Stephen’s Green. We walked around for a while, admiring how beautiful and green it all was. As we got towards the middle of the park, Mike started to look for someone to take our picture. We then found a group of people around our age. Mike went up and asked them to take our photo. What I didn’t know at the time was that he had actually told them to take a video.
We posed for the picture and after a few seconds, I thought it was over and that we would be on our way. I then turned to Mike as I watched him get down on one knee. To this day, I can’t remember what he said because I started crying. Eventually, I said YES!! The group of people taking the video started to cheer and others in the park started to whistle and clap for us. I was on cloud 9. I couldn’t believe that the love of my life and the best friend I had ever had, finally asked me to be his wife. After I got my emotions under control, we called our families. I later found out that all of my family, friends and coworkers already knew this would be happening!
We spent the next 9 days in Ireland celebrating our love. We drank at too many pubs to count, saw the most beautiful scenery and had some of the best experiences of our lives.
It was the perfect proposal. He could not have planned it any better. He took me to the one place I have always dreamt of going and asked me to spend forever with him. It was a truly a fairytale.
We’re getting married on March 31, 2018 and can’t wait to spend the rest of our lives together!
