Kimberly and Connor
How we Met
Connor and I met in high school, and it is funny because we never really got a long. It was almost as if we were so similar that we knew exactly how to push each others buttons…and we still do ;) No matter how hard we tried, the universe kept bringing us back together. Flash forward to freshman year of college and we started spending a lot of time together. I had the biggest crush on him but I could tell the feeling wasn’t mutual so I decided to go my own way.
In the fall of our sophomore year my dad passed away unexpectedly. It was the hardest thing I have ever experienced in my whole life. Losing my dad made me feel so empty, like I would always have this constant void that could never be filled. Connor came back into my life and we started dating shortly after my dad’s passing. Our relationship started a little rocky. We were both so young, I just had just transferred colleges, moved to a new city, and lost my dad. I was a closed off, emotional wreck to put it lightly! Connor stayed through it all and I will forever be grateful for that. He showed me what it was to be happy again. He was my light when all I felt was darkness around me. I still have my moments and we aren’t perfect. But I believe what makes us so strong is that we have been through everything together. We have seen the ugly sides to each other and continue to wake up every day and commit to one another.
How he asked
Connor surprised me this past July with a trip to Aruba. He had a whole scavenger hunt planned laying out how we would be flying to Aruba in mid-August. I was so excited, and after five years of dating, I was convinced that he would propose there. On August 10th, the day before we were to leave, I got a call that I received the job I had been hoping to get. I was on cloud nine! We had planned to meet Connor’s brother and sister-in-law downtown Lansing, MI for dinner before we left for Aruba. Connor works downtown already so I had his brother pick me up and I rode with them to the restaurant. Halfway there Connor called his brother and said that he left our boarding passes in his office and to have us meet him in front of his office, which happens to be the Michigan State Capitol building. I was oblivious of course and thought nothing of us meeting him at his office since I am there all the time. As Connor and I were walking up the walkway to the Capitol steps he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was completely surprised and over the moon excited! My sister then popped out from behind the trees and I soon realized that everyone but me was in on the surprise. We ended the night with a fancy dinner and flew off to Aruba to celebrate the perfect engagement. I can’t wait to marry my best friend on those same Capitol steps in just 10 months!
