How We Met
The summer between my freshman and sophomore years of high school, I volunteered to chaperone for my churches kids camp. I was excited because I loved the camp and was thinking of being a staffer. When we arrived, I caught a glimpse of a cute brown haired boy about my age running around with the kids in his church. Later we learned that chaperones in high school became junior staffers or “team assistants” (TAs). Walking to our first meeting I saw that same boy and I ran over to talk to him which is totally not like me because I am so shy!
I learned he was a year older than me and had small talk. That entire we talked and learned we went to the same summer camps, our families camped at the same parks, and we had a lot in common. At the end of the week I ran up to him and gave him a paper that had my number and I’m tiny letters said ps I think you’re cute. We began talking and became great friends but didn’t start anything because of distance. After about a year we just couldn’t stand it. While trick or treating with his family he asked me if I finally wanted to make it official. And of course I said yes.
How He Asked
After 2 of the greatest years of my life with him, we became serious about marriage. we admitted what we both had wanted since after a few months. We wanted to spend the rest of our lives together, annoying each other and exploring life. Our 2 year and 2 month anniversary happened to fall on New Year’s Eve. He had begged me to come to his church’s get together and I obliged even though I was upset because I had spent our past 2 New Years with his family and not my own. The whole night was spent playing games and laughing. At about 2 minutes until the ball drop, everyone began to gather around. He slipped up front and in the middle. He dragged me beside him which I thought was strange because everyone was around us. He was strangely quiet. We counted down and shared our New Years kiss and then immediately a video began to play. It was pictures of us.
I was confused and I kept asking what was happening and he was silent. The last slide said “I can’t wait to see what’s next. But I have one question for you now”. By now I had already started to tear up because I knew something was happening but at that point he turned and got on one knee and I broke. He pulled out the most gorgeous ring and told me he couldn’t imagine a day without me and I was his everything.
He asked me to marry him and I couldn’t get words out so I needed and let out a meek yes while both of us shaking attempted to put the ring on.
I jumped in his arms as confetti and silly string were let off all around us. The world in that moment was stopped for us though. He then told me he asked for my moms permission on my birthday. It was the happiest moment of my life and I haven’t been able to stop smiling since.
