Kenzie and Keith
How We Met
Keith and I went to the same small high school. He was a senior when I was a freshman, and I had always had a huge crush on him, but our paths didn’t really cross until years later. My senior year of high school, I went through a terrible breakup, so my best friend took me to a couple of parties at her older brother’s house. Keith was his roommate, so we got to know each other a little and began texting. After a while, the texts became less frequent and eventually stopped all together. A year later, I went over to my same best friend’s house for their Super Bowl party, and Keith was there. We didn’t really say anything to each other while we were there, but a couple hours later, he texted me. “How about that game?” I knew that he wasn’t really into football and neither was I, so that line is just a running joke between us now. He won me over with his goofy personality and games of Connect Four via text message. I accidentally told him I loved him after dating for only for a week, but on day eleven, he told me he loved me for the first time. I knew that I had met my soulmate, the person with whom I would spend the rest of my life, after a mere seven days.
How He Asked
On the morning of May 24th, 2017, Keith and I woke up to the sound of waves crashing on a beach in Sorrento, Italy. Just hours later, we were walking around the island of Capri. We were mesmerized by the icy blue water and the contrast of the white buildings against the Mediterranean Sea. The beauty of Capri cannot be described by words or fully seen in photographs. Before we even arrived on the island, I knew that Capri would be my favorite place on our tour of Italy; little did I know just how true that would be. We took a boat ride around the island, and on that boat ride our local guide told us that we would be going to a very romantic place shortly and that all the couples should be ready to make a wish and kiss. I was sitting right next to Keith on the boat, and I jokingly told him that I was going to wish that we would be engaged soon. The romantic spot the guide mentioned was a big rock in the middle of the sea with an arch under it that boats can go underneath; as you go under it, you are supposed to make a wish and kiss your partner. As we went under it, I made my wish that Keith would propose soon and kissed him. I left it at that and didn’t think much of my silly wish again and was just happy to be exploring such an amazing place with the most amazing person. After our boat ride and a short tour of the upper part of the island, we went into the Gardens of Augustus which was full of beautiful, blooming flowers, interesting statues, and an incredible view. There was a lookout with a perfect view of the sea that really accentuated the blue of the water and the flawlessness of the island. There was a huge drop off that went straight into the Mediterranean, so I was a little weary about getting too close to the edge. I was taking pictures of the sea with my phone when Keith started nudging me closer to the railing. I thought he was just being silly and pushing me over there because I was being a chicken, so I was very reluctant. My friends who were with us all had their phones out and insisted on taking a picture of Keith and I by the railing with the view in the background. Naturally, I was all for it, so I put my phone in my purse and handed it to my friend Lexi. I walked over to the railing and took in the view for a few seconds. When I turned around for the picture, I saw my best friend, my favorite person, my soulmate, down on one knee. “I have loved you since day eleven. Will you marry me?” I was so surprised and out of words that all I could do was cover my mouth and nod my head yes. On May 24th on the Island of Capri, the beginning of the best part of my life began.
