Kendra and Ryan

How We Met

Ryan was a mutual friend. I met him 5 years ago and to be honest I couldn’t stand him. I just wasn’t a fan of him. I had stopped seeing my boyfriend at the time so I never spoke to Ryan again after that. Last year I had just gotten out of a relationship that was going downhill fast and I ended up snapchatting Ryan. It started because his dad had inspected a car I was driving from my mechanic and I thought it was odd. We started talking and I decided to just hang out so he would stop asking. A few weeks went by and I learned that he wasn’t the person I thought he was when I first met him and that he was one of the sweetest guys I’d ever met. Shortly after that I fell in love with him and I moved in with him and here we are today. We still laugh at how this started.

How He Asked

It was the Wednesday before my birthday, February 22, (my birthday is February 24) and I just got home from work. I walked in the door and Ryan asked if I wanted a birthday present early. Ryan is the type of person to not give any presents early so I said “no.” Ryan didn’t push the issue so I told him I did want it early if he was going to give it to me. He took me in the living room and sat me on the couch. He grabbed something that was in a bag and handed it to me. I opened it and it was a tripod so I immediately thought it was for the camera I wanted. He told me no it was for our gopros and walked into the spare room and came out with a suitcase. He put it on my lap and I realized it was my suitcase which I had at my dad’s so I didn’t know how he got it. Before I could ask any questions he told me to open the front pocket. In it was an itinerary. It said we left the next morning at 6 AM out of Newark and that we were landing in Los Angeles California! I always make a big deal about my birthday and always want to go out but I never expected this! He had been planning this trip for a few months and even called my work to get me off. Everyone knew about this trip except for me. We got things ready and left the next morning for California. We landed, got the rental car and headed for Huntington Beach. When we got there we got into our hotel which was right next to the beach and got settled in. It was still early in the afternoon so we went walking around the town and found something to eat. After a few hours of exploring the shops, going down to the beach, and walking on the pier we went back to our room to relax. It was getting to be time for the sunset that we both wanted to see on the west coast so we got ready to go down and see that. We grabbed the tripod and the gopro and headed to the beach. We were cutting it really close so we ended up running down the walkway and onto the beach. Ryan wanted to get the pier in the picture of the sunset so we had to run way further down the beach. We got down to the water and I started taking pictures while Ryan was setting up the gopro so we could get a picture of the two of us with the sunset in the background. I was totally oblivious to what was going to happen next. We started smiling for the picture and he kept asking me if I loved him. “Of course” I kept saying, a little confused as to why he’s asking me this. Then he turned toward me and got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes but I was in shock for a good 3 minutes. When it finally hit I started bawling and wouldn’t let go of him. Needless to say, I thought it was going to be a nice little birthday vacation but it turned out he planned out this whole thing just so he could ask me to spend the rest of my life with him. I couldn’t have asked for anyone better to come into my life and he did this in the most amazing way possible.
