Kelsey and Robin

How We Met

We like to say we started the trend of online dating, when Robin and I were both 15 he asked me to be his girlfriend over MSN Messenger. I remember turning him down because I thought he was too short for me. Later realizing that was ridiculous, he asked me again and I said yes. From there, the rest is kind of history. We have spent the past ten years growing up together and experiencing life’s big moments.

High School & college graduations, moving to the city, starting our careers and everything in between. We have been by each other’s sides every step of the way.

How He Asked

Being together for as long as we have, Robin and I had obviously talked a lot about marriage and our future. We were never the couple who rushed into things. We wanted to take our time starting our careers and living a little bit more of life before becoming man and wife. With our loved ones constantly asking us, our go-to answer was “We are still young and figuring life out.” We already were our own little team and didn’t think marriage defined our relationship. Then in November of 2016, we had a change of heart. We knew we were going to be together forever, so why not make it official. I then gave Robin the “okay” to feel free to start looking for rings.

Kelsey's Proposal in Wahclella Falls

We were approaching our 10 year dating anniversary and the both of us knew we wanted to celebrate with a trip. Over the years, we had given each other so many gifts but wanted to experience a new adventure together. We threw around a lot of ideas but finally decided on Portland, Oregon. Neither of us had ever been and we were looking forward to exploring a new city and being able to enjoy the outdoors. We booked our trip in November of 2016 and we were counting the days until we left that upcoming February. As our trip was approaching, I was starting to think that Robin was going to propose while in Portland. The week before we were scheduled to leave, Robin broke the news that he really wanted to propose in Portland, but the ring wouldn’t be here in time for our trip. I was bummed but was so excited for our trip and now I didn’t have to worry about looking behind me to see what he was doing every step of the way. Fast forward to March 1st, it was our first day exploring Portland. We woke up early at our Airbnb and headed to the Columbia River Gorge to begin exploring. Robin loves videography and it is common for him to bring his camera along on our excursions. We had planned on making a trip video, so it wasn’t unusual for him to be filming me, vice versa. Our first stop was Multnomah Falls and then we made a stop at a place Robin had found by himself.

We approached the sign for Wahclella Falls, just as the rain started to fall. There was no way we weren’t going make this hike, so we decided to eat our sandwiches in the car until it passed. No more than 10 minutes later, the rain subsided and we were on our way. In January, Robin and I made a to-do list of all the things we wanted to accomplish in the upcoming year. In that list, Robin had mentioned writing a love letter to each other. Therefore I didn’t find it odd that he wanted to stop at a bridge along the trail and write our letters. We planned on reading them to each other once we reached the waterfall.

It was defiantly a romantic gesture, but I thought he was just being sweet for our anniversary. The hike was a little more difficult than we had planned. There were not many people on the trail, but those who were ahead of us said they did not make it to the waterfall. We were determined to get there. Once we got past the slippery hill leading to the waterfall, we were immediately stopped in our tracks. It was so beautiful and we were the only two there! Robin set up his camera, as he had been doing the whole trip. I remember him asking me if I wanted to keep my backpack on and then I proceeded to jokingly pat his pants pocket. (Robin is still so relieved I was patting the wrong side.) We went up to the edge of the rock and I volunteered to read my letter first. It was such a pure moment, a time I could really tell Robin how much he means to me and how thankful I am for him. Then it was Robin’s turn to read his letter. He went to go check the camera because he said the water was getting on his lens. I remember telling him “Please hurry up, I’m freezing.” He then began reading the sweetest letter I could have imagined, I was so in love with him in that moment. The second he said “so…”, I knew this was more than a letter. He got down on one knee and said “Kelsey Rae Orthaus, will you marry me!” I couldn’t stop smiling and for the first time in my life, I was completely speechless. After he asked “Is that a yes,” I nodded and said YES!

I was so gullible this whole time and he completely surprised me with the perfect proposal, with the perfect ring to the perfect man. We have spent the last 10 years growing up together and now we are going to be officially spending the rest of our lives growing old together.

Robin gave me the best gift of documenting the proposal, so we can relive this memory whenever we want!
