Kelley and Garrett

How We Met

Oh wow the story of us… Garrett and I have had a lot of ups and downs throughout the years. We are high school sweethearts, but met in middle school. We became friends in 7th grade and I always had a crush on him. It wasn’t until high school though that we decided to give dating a try (I mean come on, you kind of need a license to even go on dates!) Our first date was at the end of our junior year of high school. We went to an Anaheim Ducks hockey game together. We kissed goodnight and then he officially asked me to be his girlfriend, FINALLY! When it was time to graduate high school, we both thought it was best to commit to a college without telling the other where we decided to attend.

We both chose the University of Colorado at Boulder, and decided to continue our relationship there. There was a lot of adjustment periods in college between dorms, Greek life, and being miles away from home. Our relationship lasted throughout it all. We were tested the most when experiencing our first long-distance for a few months while abroad in different cities. We stayed together and created so many amazing memories during college together, and even sat next to each other on our graduation day.

After graduation we traveled in Europe for a couple of months. This was when I knew that he was “the one”. After our travels, we both moved back home to Orange County, California. He got a job in Los Angeles and I went back to school to get my Teaching Credential and Masters of Arts in Teaching. Once I got a job teaching 6th grade, the one-hour distance started to feel far. After two too many years apart Garrett finally decided to move back to Orange County to be near me and his family. On the weekend that he moved down he decided to make it even more special with the one question that changed my life forever, “Will you marry me?”

How He Asked

On Friday, May 26th, 2017 Garrett finally popped the question, “Kelley Hill, will you marry me?” Garrett managed to pull off the biggest surprise of my life that quite simply was perfect. He checked off all of the boxes any girl could want. Beautiful setting? Check. Photographer? Check. Champagne? Check. Both families in attendance? Check. Garrett knew better than to simply “pop the question” (let’s face it, I sometimes have high expectations) rather he created the most memorable moment of my life that we will both never forget! Leading up to this special Friday night, his family had planned to have a dinner at The Montage in Laguna Beach, California. We were to get there a little early, dress nice, and take pictures on the beach as a gift for father’s day. Little did I know, everyone was in on this special night.

Garrett had asked his mother, Karen, on Mother’s Day to go pick out my ring, and they were working together to make the proposal amazing. Garrett was working with his father, Mark, to have a reservation for dinner at The Montage and to set up photographers. Garrett also asked my father, Tom, for his blessing the week before. Garrett also spoke with my mom, Shari, and told her the game plan because my mom was in charge of making sure I had my nails done, and looked good for the night. Again, Garrett got the whole army to help him and made sure that it was going to be a perfect surprise. Friday was a day off for me, so I spent it shopping with my mom and got my nails done (thanks, mom!). One might think that getting my nails done should have gotten me onto the scent, but I always get my nails done, so I honestly didn’t think twice!

We got lunch together and then rushed back to the house so we could both get ready for our nights. You see, my parents had convinced me that they were going out to dinner with their family friends. Again, believed it. My dad even came home early from work for this dinner (which never happens), and I waved bye to them and watched them go out the door. I was oblivious and ready for a fun night at The Montage. I continued to get ready for the pictures at the beach and dinner with the Hedstrom’s, then waited for Garrett to come pick me up. Garrett knocked on my door and immediately told me how beautiful I looked, and then quickly asked to make sure he looked good too (now I know why he cared about his appearance). We drove in traffic all the way to Laguna, but we enjoyed the sunshine, music playing in his car, and talking about tons of different things. We pulled up to The Montage and made our way down to the beach to meet his family for pictures. The only problem, the path was blocked by a huge wedding!

Oddly enough we even got stuck waiting for the wedding party and bride to walk down the aisle. We finally made it across and started walking towards the path when Garrett stopped dead in his steps. “The bridal party and wedding are right there! We can’t go that way… let me call my parents to let them know we are going to be late,” Garrett told me. He started shaking, but still wasn’t think twice. He quickly called his parents to tell them that “PEOPLE WERE IN THE WAY!” I was confused, but we finally started walking to the beach. As we turned the corner, I saw some people sitting on the bench in front of us that looked familiar. “Ummmm, Garrett why are my parents here?” I questioned (these must have been the people in the way). He replied, “I have a surprise for us down at the beach…” This was the moment. I knew it.

I started shaking as we held hands and walked down the steps to the beach. As we walked hand-in-hand, I saw two chairs set up perfectly on the sand as the sun was setting. “This is for us Kelley, have a seat” Garrett excitedly urged with a mischievous smile on his face. That is when he reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a box, and got onto his knee. I buried my face in my hands, in disbelief. I couldn’t believe that this was finally happening, after eight years together! Both of us couldn’t stop giggling while Garrett spoke words about the past, present, and future of our relationship. He then asked, “Kelley Hill, will you marry me?” I couldn’t contain my excitement as I told him “YES!” We embraced, and then he put the most beautiful ring I have ever seen on my finger.

As we giggled, hugged, and kissed we enjoyed our first glass of champagne as fiancé and fiancé! He then waved over photographer for some engagement photos, followed by our families coming down to the beach. It was perfect having everyone there to share such memorable moment of our lives with us. We then made our way back up to The Montage for a gorgeous family dinner. It was a perfect engagement, and I can’t imagine having it any other way!
