Kayla and Matthew
How We Met: I met Matthew in May 2013 at his first bodybuilding competition. My mom competes as well and was doing the same show. She actually introduced us because she knew I had a crush on him! Nothing happened between us for a few months until we ended up in the same class that fall semester. He and I started working out and studying together.
Finally, after my 21st birthday in October, he asked me out on our first date and the rest is history. He even went all out when he asked me to be his girlfriend! This is how I knew he was the one.
How He Asked: Matt told me he had a surprise for me about a week beforehand and that we would be going after dinner at my mom’s. After dinner, he told me he was just taking me to watch the sunset at the beach because we rarely get to since our schedules are so opposite and he just wanted to have a romantic evening with me. I had to drive separately because he met me at my mom’s. The whole way there I was wondering what was really going on but just distracted myself by singing along to the radio.
I think I listened to “What Do You Mean?” and “Wildest Dreams” about 5 times each. Instead of parking at the oceanfront, he turns and pulls into a hidden State Park entrance. We finally parked and and he told me to leave my phone in the car so we could just be together. We walked along the beach and I could tell he was nervous because he was so quiet. We turned this corner that was covered by trees and I saw a rose petals everywhere in the sand, a bouquet of roses, and a wooden plank with candles and a large seashell on it.
He walked me towards it then stopped right next to it. At this point, I knew what was going on and I started crying! He turned me around to face him and I saw someone with a camera hidden in the trees and then “Wildest Dreams” started playing. He then started pouring his heart out to me and asked me to spend forever with him as he got down on one knee and opened the shell with my beautiful ring inside!
I guess I forgot to say anything because he said “That’s yours baby!” He put it on my finger and handed me the bouquet. Such an amazing fairy-tale like night! He is the most caring, selfless and loving man I have ever met and I am so happy I can say I will be spending the rest of my life with him!
