Kayla and Brandon
How We Met
I can still remember this day as if it were yesterday. It was Summer of 2003. While on a walk with my best friend, Melissa in her neighborhood, I noticed this boy on his bike, barreling down the side walk directly at us. As in a way manner of an attempt to scare us. I can remember standing there thinking, “Can’t he ride on the street?” and “He’s coming right at us, does he expect us to move?” which I’m sure I was more than likely ready to make a comment at this unknown boy, when, Melissa begins to laugh and greats him. At the age of 12 you tend to think you and your best friend, know just about the same people.
But I didn’t know who this kid on a BMX bike was. Before I knew it, I heard my name. “Brandon, this is Kayla. Kayla, this is Brandon.” And in that moment everything changed. The three of us spent the rest of the day hanging out laughing, and laughing and laughing. By the time I had to go home, I was instantly head over heels of him. I’m talking, “I love Brandon Sawyer” written over every notebook I had. We developed a friendship that turned into a relationship three years later sophomore year of high school.
How He Asked
Fast forward 3,650 days later to October 7, 2016, our 10 year anniversary. Knowing it’s our anniversary, I’ve been on pins and needles wondering what was in store for such a big milestone in our relationship. My mind hadn’t been able to turn off thoughts of a ring for week. That morning I had to be at work early, so I was up at 4:30 a.m. While trying my hardest to stay quite and not wake Brandon up, he rolled over and with a sweet, sleepy smile, said, “Good morning! Happy Anniversary.” I felt myself staring at him. Thinking, is this it? Will he ask now? No. Nothing. Just a good morning kiss. I realize how crazy I’m sounding, so, off to work I go. Between the hours of 7:00 am and 12:00 pm, I manage to convince myself that he had called off work, and I would be going home to a surprise engagement.
I was on cloud nine. On my lunch break I knew I had to run to the store to pick up an anniversary card. That’s when my mom called and ask me to come over for dinner after work. Instantly, my self created could was gone. I was upset. I was confused. Thinking, ‘why would she ask me over for dinner!? I need to go home and get engaged!’ Little did I know, she knew her text message would throw me off. Some how I manage to throw any thought of it not happening when I get home, out the window. So, there I am, pulling into the drive way, stepping out of the car to the smell of someone and their BBQ. Naturally, I’m thinking he’s hidden his car, and he’s home, and there must be people here for a engagement BBQ! I take a deep breath and walk into the house to see nothing but the pile of clean clothes I had pulled out of the dryer before work. Confused, I walk through the living room into the kitchen, still no one.
Remembering the BBQ I smelled, I pass the kitchen table to open the blinds to the back yard- no one. He’s at work. Per usual, it’s Friday. Before I know it, my neighbors, Raquel, Travis and Ivy ask me to come over to hang out. As time goes by, hour by hour I start finding myself getting upset. At this point I had completely stopped thinking about a ring. I just want to see him. Hug him. Spend our anniversary together. But know I have to patiently wait for him to get off work. A little more time passes and I try telling my neighbors I’m tired and heading home. But they managed to convince me to stay and play a game. As were standing around they’re kitchen island, Raquel suddenly pulls her phone up to point it at me startling me, I turn to my right and catch a glimpse of him. Brandon home.
He’s turning the corner with the most beautiful bouquet of flowers I’ve ever seen. Red roses and stargazer lilies. As I am fixated on the flowers, everything slowly starts to click. Our song, “Follow Me” by Uncle Kracker is playing. He’s dressed up. And now he’s kneeling down. With a smile on his face and the most stunning diamond ring, he asks, “Will you marry me?” I can feel my heart beat in my face. Everything is in slow motion. I’m so excited. I can’t believe this is actually happening. He just asked me to marry him! In real time, I’m frozen. No words come out of my mouth. Then, Travis shouts, “Say something!” I snap back into reality and scream, “OH YES!” I was so nervous, I even gave him my right hand at first. After he slips the ring on my ever shaking finger, we embrace in the most loving and warm hug. And it all becomes real, I’m going to be Mrs. Brandon Sawyer.
