How We Met

Nate and I were both music education majors at Wayne State College in Wayne, NE. I had heard of him before, but never really remembered him other than that he was goofy.

Then, spring semester of my sophomore year, we had Class in Percussion together (where you learn how to play different percussion instruments). Well, being a percussion major, he was always super good at the different rolls and hits and I thought that he was super annoying. He would always sit by me and be really good and (I felt) rub it in my face that he was really good at the drums. Then, we were talking and hung out a couple of times with his roommate and girlfriend at the time.

Flash forward to fall semester, and his girlfriend was my roommate. Inadvertently, we spent more and more time together. We would play Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies, watch RWBY the American anime, and just talk nerd a LOT. In November, his girlfriend decided that college and Nate weren’t for her, so she broke up with him and moved out of our dorm room.

And then in January 2015, we started dating. In July 2015, we moved in together (yay off-campus) and we haven’t looked back since then.

How He Asked

November 11, 2017- it was Veteran’s Day (I’m in the military), it was my last marching band game as a drum major (it was my 2nd year), and, unbeknownst to me, the day of my dreams.

I had had some suspicions that he would propose on that day only because he said that his sister was coming to the game. She lived two hours away and had hardly come to the games when Nate had played in the band.

So, that morning, I was trying to not cry at all of the lasts I was doing in my marching band career. Last time to put the uniform on, last time to take a selfie in said uniform (and look great in it obviously), and so on. The marching band was in the stadium, and me being the veteran drum major, I was on the podium that was on the bottom in front of everyone. Nate had come along with us into the stadium and had asked the percussionists if it was ok if he could play the quints (5 drums), so he was standing right in front of me.

As first quarter was drawing to a close, I announced that we would be performing Hey Baby! (I unintentionally chose the perfect song). I started the song like normal and then we got to the part where the singing started, and I could tell that the band was singing something different than I was, but I didn’t really think about it. Then, on the second rendition of the song, Nate stopped playing (I didn’t notice) and pulled out the ring and hid it behind his back. He waited for the singing to get done and he pulled out the ring. I didn’t notice at first, but I saw something moving that wasn’t sticks so I looked down and was incredibly shocked. I actually think I immediately started crying and asked, “Are you kidding me, right now?!?” (because I was conducting). He just laughed and nodded and gestured with the ring box as if to say, “Well, are you saying yes?” SO, there I was, crying and conducting and I could only nod and whisper yes. He hopped up onto the side wall in front of me and we hugged and kissed. However, I was still conducting (come on man, I had a job, how was I to know you had it covered?). He faced the band and we conducted the last bit of the song together. As soon as the band was done playing, they all immediately started screaming and taking pictures. It felt great to have 110 people screaming for your happiness. After the song, he put the ring on my finger, and my sister came over and we took some pictures.

It was such a wonderfully memorable day, and it was the perfect way for him to propose.
