how we met

I’m a wedding photographer and a hopeless romantic. I have photographed weddings for almost 10 years now, and I capture them because of how much I believe in love between two people. Needless to say, it was incredible getting to be a part of so many other people’s weddings, but it was also a decent reminder that I didn’t have my own story… yet.

I first met Katie through our mutual friend on Facebook, who got married in Alaska. I know that may sound cheesy, but I could tell by her smile in all of her photos that she was an extraordinary person. So when we met in person for the first time, I was shocked that the sweetness I saw in her smile just through photos definitely proved to ring true in her personality. A few weeks after that friend’s wedding, we started talking. Facebook messaging turned into texting, which turned into calling every day, and then skyping as often as we could. We both fell pretty hard for each other, and I told her I wanted to move out to North Carolina from California to date her.

So after two months of talking every single day for hours, I flew her out to LA, packed up everything I owned in my car, and drove across the country with her. Our first date was over 2,500 miles and it was incredible. I asked her to be my girlfriend at the top of Angel’s Landing in Zion, and we loved every second of that drive. Fast forward two and a half years later…

how he asked

I told her that I was shooting a wedding in Kauai and that she was invited. I found a bride who lived in Hawaii to write a fake inquiry and she bought it! So when we went out there she fully expected to be shooting a “luau” rehearsal dinner the 2nd day we were there. I had told her there was a really fun hike that I wanted to take her on before the dinner, and she saw nothing coming. We hiked the beautiful Napali coast, swam under an incredible waterfall, and then took a walk on the secluded beach.

I had my brother secretly place a message in a bottle on the beach and when she found it, and she immediately asked if I put it there. I told her I had no idea what she was talking about and asked her how I would have done that! She saw there was a hand written letter in the bottle, and I told her maybe we should throw it back in the ocean because it was probably for someone else. Her curiosity got the best of her, though, so we opened it up. It was written “to my love” so it wasn’t until about halfway through that she realized I was proposing to her.

We both cried, and she said yes when I asked her on the beach that day. I had some fun surprises for her as well! I had flown out a professional photographer/videographer team, a professional cook to prepare a 5-course meal for us that night, my brother and sister-in-law, and also her sister and brother-in-law.

She told me on the hike back that she wanted to share this moment with some close friends and family – and I told her all she had to do was wait there for 10 minutes and she could! She was totally blown away when all of those people walked around the bend!
