Katie and Brian

How We Met

Brian and I met for the first time in the summer of 2010 playing on a coed softball team we had both signed up for.  I recognized him as a friend of a friend, and so when he introduced himself in the dugout, I casually/creepily replied “Hi! I already know you!”  Fortunately my initial weirdness didn’t scare him away, and he says he was drawn to me immediately by my smile and eyes.  I, on the other hand, was not interested at first and did not find his head to toe extreme softball gear and metallic rainbow sunglasses as endearing as he might have hoped!  He persisted in winning me over week by week with his humor and charm, and we started hanging out outside of softball games.  It didn’t take me long to realize that I really liked him, and we spent most of the summer together.  He watched the Bachelor with me, I pretended to be interested in the World Cup, and the rest is history!

How He Asked

Brian and I were both in grad school, so we had talked about getting married over the summer.  I knew that he would probably propose sometime during the fall or winter, but had no idea how or when it would happen.  I’m pretty good at sniffing out clues, so I had doubts about Brian’s ability to pull off a surprise of epic proportions, but his proposal absolutely blew me out of the water!

On Fridays, I didn’t work until later in the afternoon, and on this particular Friday morning I was hanging out at home with my mom and cousin having coffee and talking.  We were waiting for my sister to get there, so when the doorbell rang I assumed it was her and continued making breakfast.  No one else made a move to answer the door so I went to get it, and when I opened it, I found Brian at the door wearing a suit and holding a bag of my favorite doughnuts.  My immediate thought was that he had a meeting (hence why he was more dressed up than usual) and just swung by before work to bring me breakfast (which he has done on occasion).  He then told me he had a special day planned for us, and that I had a couple hours to eat breakfast and get ready.  At this point, I began to suspect what might be happening, but also thought that maybe it was a decoy date, because I hadn’t expected him to propose this early.

We all ate breakfast, and then my sister and cousin helped me choose a dress and hung out with me while I got ready.  Soon, Brian and I were off!  The first place he took me was a salon (!!!) where I got my nails done.  Looking back, I laugh because my nails were in terrible condition the day before–a true testament to me not suspecting a thing!  Next, we went to the park where we first met playing softball.  He led me to the dugout where we had introduced ourselves, and on the bench there was an envelope with my name on it.  I opened it to find the sweetest letter about how meeting me had changed his life (cue tears.)  At the end of the letter, it told me the next location was where we had our first date–so we headed to the San Jose Giants stadium (baseball is clearly a big part of our relationship!)  Once we got there, I found another letter.  Brian had put together a scavenger hunt around the city of all the places that were memorable to us and our relationship.  Next, we went to an Ethiopian restaurant for lunch.  We went to Ethiopia on a missions trip together and that’s where he first told me he loved me.  The waitress brought out a third letter, and at the end of this one, it said that I’ve never been to this next place, but that it will become very important to us.

After lunch, Brian began driving me to this unknown location, and I was so excited and nervous!  We finally got to this gorgeous winery, Kirigin Cellars, and he led me around to this grassy path lined with roses and a mountain backdrop.  I saw a table with flowers set up halfway down the path.  When we got there, I saw the fourth and final letter which Brian read to me and then got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife.  I was obviously thrilled and said YES! and he gave me the most beautiful ring.

My sister and brother-in-law captured it all from a hiding spot, and I thought that was the end of the surprises.  But when we got back to my parents’ house to tell them the good news, I was surprised again by all our closest friends and family there to congratulate us at the engagement party Brian had organized!  It was so perfect to end the day celebrating with everyone we love!
