Proposal Ideas New York City

How We Met

Brian and I met in a communications class at the University of Dayton second semester junior year (2010), although we did not start dating until second semester senior year (2011). I walked into class on the first day and saw my next door neighbor, Alyssa, so I sat next to her. Brian was sitting right in front of us, so he turned around and Alyssa introduced us (they went to high school together). That day, we were all walking back to our respective houses after class and we realized that we lived across the street from each other. From there, we got to know each other as friends, walking to and from class together in beautiful Dayton, Ohio (one of the most romantic places on Earth, in my opinion). Things eventually turned romantic over Cousin Vinny’s pizza one night, but when the year ended, I went back to New York and he went back to Chicago. We continued chatting and getting to know each other throughout the summer. His quick sarcastic jokes really made me laugh, and his kind, affectionate nature made me feel so comfortable. What I really loved was that he was so interested in me and my personal interests and hobbies. We both opened up worlds for each other that were not there before. For example, I was never a die hard Packers fan before I met Brian and he had never eaten an oyster or seen a Broaway musical (ok, he still doesn’t love musicals, but he sits through them because he loves me)! When we returned to school for senior year, things continued to move slowly. Finally, by Valentines Day 2011, we became official! Upon graduation, he decided to join me on an around-the-world backpacking trip, and the rest is history! Look at that mop of hair!

How He Asked

A friend of mine at work had gone on this amazing helicopter ride around NYC- the helicopters had no doors so you could dangle your feet out and take amazing photos. I bought us tickets for our combined birthday gifts. Did I think it would be a great place to get engaged?? Perhaps, but I wasn’t going to get my hopes up… When our flight day came up and it was raining, I was a bit disappointed, but I called a friend to see what they were up to that evening. She said a bunch of friends were getting together to watch the Rangers game at a bar near Grand Central, so we decided to do that instead. Brian asked if we wanted to go out to dinner beforehand. In NYC…with no reservation?? Well, ok but get ready to WAIT. So we went to Lilia in Williamsburg and there was a 2 hour wait. I insisted we eat there since “we have all the time in the world now” and “I can’t continue living my life without eating what Time Out New York said was the best pasta dish in the city”. Brian must have been so nervous! After we finally finished dinner and headed up to Midtown, I really had no idea what was about to happen (the proof being that I did not wear my designated engagement outfit I bought earlier in the week).

Katie and Brian's Engagement in New York City

Brian pulled me into the middle of Grand Central. It was the first piece of New York he saw when he came here for the first time in 2011, and he was of course struck by its incredible beauty. Now that New York is his home, he felt that Grand Central would be the perfect place to propose. I can’t really remember what he said, but I know it was beautiful. He got down on one knee and I of course said “YES!”. My friend who sneakily told me about the Rangers game was the one taking pictures. Afterwards, we went to the oyster bar for a champagne toast and then to Wheel tapper to “watch the game”. There, 50 of our closest friends and family surprised us! It was truly the happiest day of my life. The next day, we were able to do the helicopter ride! I was worried they wouldn’t let me up in the helicopter with my ring on (and thus would not be able to get the money shot!!), but they were very cool and allowed me to wear it during the ride. What an adrenaline rush it was!! It was such an amazing experience. We really felt on top of the world that day!
