Kathryn and Will

How We Met

Will and I officially met on our first day of high school. While we didn’t go to the same school, we were both on the swim team. Because of limited pool space, all three of the local high school swim teams practiced together. Neither of us remembers how we became friends, but we were always hanging out around one another at practice and at meets. At the end of our senior year, we actually found out that we had been on the same soccer team in Kindergarten, so we’ve technically known each other since we were five. We’re actually standing next to each other in the team picture! Toward the end of our senior year, we started spending more time together, and the final State Qualification swim meet came up. As the captains for our teams, I thought it would be fun to go cheer on the underclassmen who were trying to qualify for State. I texted Will, and the captain for the third high school.

I got a text from the third captain that said he couldn’t make it, when in reality Will had asked him to stay behind so he could spend the evening with me. After the meet we went to dinner, and I didn’t want the evening to end so we went to my parent’s house to watch a movie. Somehow, I still didn’t recognize the evening as being a date. That is, until he kissed me. In the fall we both went to Oklahoma State University. We dated all through college except for a brief period during our sophomore year. Even when we were apart we would leave little notes on one another’s bikes when we saw them on campus. When we finally realized that this was for real, we never looked back.

How He Asked

Last summer, my family was going on vacation before my middle sister started her first job, and my youngest sister left for college. We decided to go to Los Angeles because my sisters and I had never been. For each of our senior years we’ve taken professional family photos to commemorate the year, so I wasn’t too surprised when my mom started talking about getting our family photos done at the Griffith Observatory. My mom was acting way too excited about getting these photos done. I should have seen something coming when she was especially concerned about the color coordination of all of our clothing. She made sure I was involved with picking out the color scheme for the clothes, which I thought was a little weird. I remember telling her that I would wear whatever she wanted me to, that these were her photos, and that we were all going to look fine. I had no idea that these photos were actually for me.

A day into our LA vacation we drove to the top of the Griffith Observatory, and it was breathtaking. You could see all of LA sprawled out below the mountainside, and even a little glimpse of the ocean. We met with the photographer, and she started posing us all around the observatory. At one point during pictures, I wondered to myself if this was a popular location for engagements, because the scenery was gorgeous. It’s incredible to think that was actually the spot for my very own engagement!

At the end of family pictures, we took some individual pictures of my sisters and I, with my youngest sister going first and ending with me. Once it was my turn, we took a few pictures, and then it just seemed like everyone was intently staring in my direction. All of the sudden I felt this person next to me. I turned to politely let them know that they were in my personal space, and then realized that it was Will. On one knee.

I went into complete shock. I don’t think I’ve ever been so surprised in my life! Will and I have been together for about seven years, so it’s hard for him to surprise me without me getting suspicious. He definitely caught me off guard. It’s funny because my first reaction was that this wasn’t real, and that I had somehow fallen asleep. He had already asked (and I said Yes!) before I truly knew that this was for real!

From here we were able to have an engagement photo shoot immediately, and we laugh looking back at them because I’m so excited I can’t even smile like normal. My mouth is wide open in pure joy!

Having the pictures was so important to me, and I’m so glad he thought to have a photographer (who is phenomenal) and also to include my family in the moment. It’s been 6 months, and I’m still taken away every time I look at the pictures. It was the perfect day, the perfect proposal, and most importantly, the perfect guy.
