How We Met

In February of 2012, I went on a canning weekend for Penn State THON, our school’s student-run philanthropy, at Trey’s home. To our advantage, most of our freshmen friends decided to not go canning that weekend. I knew of Trey through our group of friends, but this was the first time we were in a setting by ourselves. I was intrigued by Trey’s sense of humor and wittiness throughout the weekend. After the canning weekend, Trey and I knew there was something special between the two of us. A month later, I attended a spring break mission trip, in Kentucky, with our Christian ministry. Throughout the whole week, I looked for opportunities to talk to Trey. On the last night of our trip, we spent the evening star gazing with our friends. As the evening continued, our friends continued to leave star gazing to go to bed. Six hours later, Trey and I were the only people left star gazing. We talked about everything under the moon. After this night, we talked and went on dates outside of our friends. Trey courted me for four months before officially asking me to be his girlfriend under a starry night on August 8th, 2012.

How He Asked

In July of 2016, Kate and I took a road trip out west. We visited the Badlands, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier National Park, and the Canadian Rockies. The last destination on our trip was Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. On our last day of our road trip, I asked Kate if we could dress up for dinner at the Chateau outside of Lake Louise. Kate was suspicious why I wanted to look nice, but she went along with the plan and thought it would be nice to have a very special last night of the trip. We spent the day hiking around Lake Louise and took a 6.6km trail to the Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House. We enjoyed tea and biscuits when we got there and made the most of our hike back in a rain storm. After a morning of hiking, we got cleaned up and ready to go out for dinner. At this time, Kate says I started to act “a little different”.

Supposedly, I started to walk laps around the truck while I waited for Kate to get ready. Kate was very suspicious. Surprisingly, after a very rainy day, the weather turned into blue skies and sun. During dinner, I tried to throw Kate off and mentioned going canoeing, or getting ice cream after dinner. At the end of the dinner, I had to go to the “bathroom”. Unknowingly to Kate, I was really meeting up with a photographer and communicated just where I was going to do the proposal so our photographer could get set up outside.

We finished our dinner and started to go for a walk on the pathway around Lake Louise. Kate thought she saw a photographer hiding in the grasses. Before she could make the connection, I told Kate I have been meaning to tell her something. I said I love you for the first time. Kate said I love you, too. I got down on one knee and popped the question.

She said yes! We ended the proposal with an engagement photoshoot with our photographer. It was the best day ever!
