How We Met

Jack and I met in Honors World History our freshman year of High School in 2007. He sat behind me and I would turn around to talk to him because he was shy. Every day that school year I asked my friends a random question to get to know them better, and I would ask Jack those questions. We became friends and slowly started to like each other. We worked on a project where we had to bake a pound cake and had a lot of fun hanging out while it was baking. About a month later, I asked him the question, “If you could ask me any one question, what would it be?” He made me wait until the next day, so on Valentine’s Day 2008, after class in the hallway he asked me to be his girlfriend. The rest is history (haha) and we have been together ever since!

How He Asked

I knew the proposal was coming because we designed the ring together, but I had no idea what Jack was planning! About a month beforehand, he found a peony garden (my favorite flower) and planned the whole thing with my little sister, Julia. Two weeks later, I told him I had found the same peony garden and that I wanted to go. Instead of changing the plan, Jack made me think that the peony garden trip was my idea, and really threw me off. I thought it might happen, but nothing seemed exactly lined up. When we got to the garden he started to act a little nervous, and as we walked through the flowers, he was sort of guiding me to a certain spot. We turned down one of the rows and at the end there was a pink picnic blanket with a basket set up with all of these gorgeous peonies around it. He reached into the basket and took out a velvet box, told me how much he loved me, and got down on one knee. While all of this was happening, I was wondering where my sister was, because I had always joked that I wanted her to hide in a bush to take pictures of the proposal. Suddenly, she popped up from behind the peonies, covered in dirt! It was such a special moment and I am so glad she could share it with Jack and I. We took some pictures in the garden, ate some of the picnic lunch, and went to celebrate with our families. It was truly the perfect day.
