Kat and Zach
August 19, just another day full of excitement and I had zero ideas that the man of my dreams was about to drop onto his knee. We packed our bags for an unknown state (I packed sweaters for Colorado, a bathingsuit for california, boots, heels, prepared for wherever!). We went to the airport at 5am to ask for the first flight out, which Zach knows has always been on my bucket list, and got San Diego. I was so excited! So we got to San Diego and I ran to the restroom to get changed out of my comfy clothes while Zach got a rental car, then we drove up to Oceanside for breakfast. While I was scoping out hotels Zach was looking for a cool area to hike and get a nice view of the ocean. We finish breakfast and head over to the spot that Zach found, and he keeps texting somebody so I am a little annoyed, like “Hello!! I am right here!” I think he knew I was getting annoyed so he put his arm around me. That moment was so romantic, listening to the waves crash on the beach, the weather was perfect, slightly overcast and much cooler than Phoenix, AZ. God had his hand on that moment and nothing could go wrong until BAM! something runs into my leg.
It’s a dog and I think who on earth has their crazy dog off the leash and I see it’s MY DOG (who my mom has been watching since nursing school started 4 months ago)!! I turn to look behind me and Zach’s sister and brother in law come walking up the stairs to us with a camera and then I see MY MOM (she lives in Sacramento, CA, and I haven’t seen her for 6 months)! I turn back around and Zach is on his knee asking me to be his forever, “Kathryne, will you make me the happiest man in the world?” I started sobbing and think I said yes before he even got the whole sentence out. I have never been so happy in my life!!!!
Turns out- Zach bought those tickets to San Diego 3 months ago and went to the airport early on the 19th to tell them to tell me all the other flights were booked up. So here I was with a 40 pound bag full of random clothes and Zach’s bag only had a Tshirt and a pair of shoes (and the ring of course hehe – no wonder why he wouldn’t let me touch his bag). Zach’s sister and brother in law got to the spot the day before to scope out the area and my mom had been driving all night to get there on time. Then Zach told me that we were actually headed back home in a couple of hours, which I was a little bummed but honestly nothing could break the good vibes I was feeling, so we sat around and drank mimosas with the family on the beach and celebrated the proposal.
I wasn’t the only one getting a surprise filled day though! Southwest also wanted to throw a special surprise to say Congrats to us! There were fun games during the flight, vouchers, streamers, champagne, cupcakes.. an employee serenaded us on the loud speaker and people were out on the tarmac with posters saying congratulations Zach and Kat! There were banners hanging off the ceiling as we walked off the plane and even more sweet treats and balloons. Southwest Airlines did an amazing job turning this day into an even more special day than it already was.
Once we left, Zach said that there were no more surprises, I was so tired from all the excitement that I could have fallen asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow, but Zach convinced me to go get a drink with a couple of friends at a restaurant near the airport and I caved in, but when we showed up, the place was filled with family and friends! It was THE BEST day and the best night of celebration!
