Kara and Patrick

Where to Propose in Birmingham, Alabama

How We Met

As crazy as it sounds and it is to think about, Patrick and I met in the 8th grade when we were just 13 years old. We were assigned lockers beside each other in the halls of Bragg Middle School in Gardendale, Alabama, and that was the very beginning of a friendship that we never realized we were embarking upon together. Patrick and I remained friends from 8th to 10th grade. Honestly, I thought boys still had cooties during that time, so I never thought of him as anything other than a friend.

Kara's Proposal in Birmingham, Alabama

Our junior year of high school, we became closer friends and eventually that led to both of us developing a crush on each other. That year, Patrick asked me to be his girlfriend. Being a young teenage girl, that was a pretty big deal to become ‘Facebook official.’ Since then, we have gone from graduating high school, to surviving 5 years of college, to transitioning into adulthood. Being together for so long has been so challenging – you literally ‘grow’ together.

Marriage Proposal Ideas in Birmingham, Alabama

You see each other go through just about everything, good and bad, and sometimes it’s very hard. I believe when the good outweighs the bad and you’re both still willing to keep going together, it’s worth it. I have a hard time remembering what my life was like before Patrick became a part of it; he has always been right by my side and I am forever grateful for every memory we have shared together. He is my very best friend and always will be – I wouldn’t trade my relationship or friendship with him for anything in this world. We’re both so excited that the time has finally come to become husband and wife.

How He Asked

For this story to make sense, you have to be a big bachelor fan (my favorite show). The night before Patrick proposed, he told me that our friend had tickets to a charity event the next evening in downtown Birmingham. We both graduated from the University of Alabama and are big football fans. Alabama was playing Florida in the SEC championship that afternoon, and I was told that the charity event was also a football game watch party where we were going to cheer the tide on. That morning, Patrick told me he was going to play golf, so I thought that is where he was leading up to the time that he was supposed to pick me up, when in fact he was really at home all day getting everything ready for that evening. It was raining pretty heavily right before Patrick picked me up. We were running really late to “the event”, so he told me he wasn’t going to come inside for me just to be ready and that he would let me know when he arrived at my house.

When he texted me and told me he was pulling into my driveway, I walked outside where a limo was waiting for me. My heart instantly felt like it stopped, because at this time I knew what was going on. I got in the limo without any idea where I was going. As we drove through Birmingham, we drove up to a gated house that overlooks the whole city of Birmingham. At this point, I still had no idea whose house we were at. As we pulled up to the house, I noticed that it looked identical to the bachelor mansion on the show. As I got out, I saw a red carpet leading to the foyer. There was Patrick with rose petals and candles lit surrounding him and one single rose in his hand. He asked if I would accept his ‘final rose,’ and honestly I was so nervous that I’m not really sure what he said to me while he was proposing other than ‘I’ve loved you since we we’re 17 years old and I always will. Will you marry me?’

After he proposed, we took a few pictures and then the limo took us to one of the fanciest restaurants in Birmingham called Ocean where Patrick had made dinner reservations. After dinner, we then back to our hometown where our family and friends were waiting for us with an engagement party. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect night.
