Kala and Kip

How We Met: Kip and I met in high school. Since we both knew we wanted to go to college, we had no idea what the future held for our blossoming, young love. All we knew was the more we got to know each other, it was clear we were a match made in heaven! We set our eyes on the prize (finishing college, and hopefully an engagement!) and began the hard work. Four years of long distance later, we were overjoyed to have completed college! However, we had both set our eyes on graduate studies – Kip chose to pursue his Doctorate in Physical Therapy in Southern California and I would be pursuing a Master’s Degree in Speech and Language Pathology in Northern California. Even though so much of our relationship was from a distance, Kip always managed to support and encourage me, so I knew that he would be worth the wait.

How He Asked: My best friend from high school, Amy, recently graduated with her BFA in Photography from Seattle University. She was visiting our hometown for only one weekend this summer, so I was determined to make it home from school that weekend so I could see her! Amy asked if Kip and I would be interested in doing a photo shoot with her while she was home so that she could try out her graduation present – a pricey, new camera lens! Considering she had photographed Kip and I since high shool, I quickly agreed and was looking forward to some new photos.

The afternoon of the photoshoot arrived, and we all drove out to a gorgeous hillside that overlooks our hometown. Unbeknownst to me, Kip and Amy had been planning the proposal for this afternoon all along! Amy began snapping photos when we arrived at the hillside. Kip managed to play it cool up until the moment he began proposing…well, almost!

While Amy was taking pictures, Kip pulled me in close and said, “Kala, we’re not here for a photo shoot.”

I instantly knew what was about to happen, but couldn’t believe it was actually happening. I tried my best to focus and enjoy his sweet words, but it was such a whirlwind of emotions to finally be in the moment I had been waiting so long for! He continued by telling me how much he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me and asked me to marry him.

With many tears, I said yes!

Amy snapped a few shots with the ring once the tears subsided!

After capturing the entire proposal, Amy disappeared and returned with champagne, glasses, a single rose, and a blanket. We sipped champagne and cherished the moment while watching the sun set over the town where our love story began.
