Kaitlyn and Sal

How We Met: Sal and I met outside our soon-to-be high school in Staten Island, New York during a rehearsal for the play, Gypsy. An uninterested, twelve year-old Kaitlyn called a thirteen year-old Sal, “ugly with an okay personality”. A few years later he became my high school sweetheart and the love of my life. It’s been twelve years and he’s still reminding me of what that twelve year old said; I’ll never live it down!

How He Asked: Tuesday, April 28th started off like any regular day. I woke up, got on the Staten Island Ferry and headed to my part-time job working in the bookkeeping office of a nursing home. Around 1:00 pm, I was told to head up to the Administrator’s office. When I got there I was handed a card that ended up leading me on the most epic scavenger hunt of my life.

The card had a riddle that told me to head outside, as I left work I was surprised to find my best friend, Lyndsey, waiting for me. We got in her car and started driving; the questions began to pour out but Lyndsey was reluctant to let on as to what was happening.

My heart was racing and then the car stopped. I looked up to see where we were and once I did I knew exactly what was happening. I’ve always told my fiancé, Sal, “I don’t know how you’re going to do it but please make sure my nails are done before you propose”; well he listened. As we walked up to the salon I was shocked to see Robert, another one of my best friends, waiting for us inside. The three of us were pampered and had the chance to catch up. Once my nails were dry, I was given a bag with a pair of earrings inside along with another riddle.

I got back in the car and was taken to the Staten Island Ferry. I boarded the boat and shortly after got on the subway and headed to mine and Sal’s favorite Thai restaurant, Room Service. My sister, Kimberly was waiting for me at the bar. I kept saying to her, “What’s happening, tell me!” and she would respond, “Nothing’s happening but maybe you should put some makeup on.” After putting on some mascara and finishing a few cocktails I was handed another riddle as well as a fortune cookie.

I cracked it open and a beautiful, gold necklace fell into my hands. When we were younger, Sal and I ordered Chinese food and he handed me a cookie which also had a necklace inside. I followed the riddle and my sister sent me on my way. Okay back on the subway for me; while sitting on the train, I anxiously awaited meeting what I thought was my soon-to-be fiancé. I met Sal at Central Park, he looked so handsome, dressed in a suit holding flowers.

He took my hand, escorted me into the park, and took me for a walk which is something we enjoy doing whenever we have the time. Suddenly, Sal stopped and I realized we were completely alone. It was beautiful! There were flowers, a warm breeze, and the man I loved, it was perfect. This was it, Sal was going to ask me to be his wife. He was saying the sweetest things then reached into his pocket and all I could think was “YES!” Then like in the movies, I heard the sound of breaks screeching. The box he was holding wasn’t the right size, it was long and thin. He opened the box and offered this gorgeous bracelet. Needless to say it was stunning but I wasn’t the happiest girl at that moment.

Sal said, “I haven’t done something romantic for you in a really long time so I wanted to do something special”. Pretty confused, I thanked him but couldn’t help but think to myself, “Wow, I guess I’m not getting engaged today but wow this was A LOT of work!”. Sal said he forgot something in our apartment, so we headed home before going out to dinner. That entire elevator ride all I could think of was how I thought I was getting engaged and it turns out all I was getting that night was dinner. The chime of the elevator went off, the doors opened, I fumbled for my keys and unlocked the door to our apartment.

As I pushed open the heavy green door, I looked up and tears filled my eyes, the surprises weren’t over. Floating in front of me were hundreds of photos, all hanging from red balloons that flooded our entire apartment. Sal and I have been together since high school, so we’ve taken a lot of pictures over the years, but it was remarkable to see eight years worth of memories before my eyes. Of course it wouldn’t be a Sal and Kaitlyn event without a little excitement; Sal was holding my purse, turned, and knocked over a glass vase holding our umbrellas which shattered.

So tears and smiles quickly turned into more tears and uncontrollable laughter. We eventually made our way down the hall to our bedroom amidst the clouds of red balloons stood a giant white balloon which had a card fastened to the ribbon. The card read, “And I have one more thing to say”. Sal got down on one knee and made me the happiest girl in the world.

After I was wiping the tears away, we made our way back into our living room. Sal had surprised me again, waiting for us with champagne in hand was both our families.

It was incredible to have the chance to immediately celebrate with them.

After some time of chatting about the day, everyone took a walk up the street to a nearby bar, Harlem Tavern. My fiancé did it again and had many of our friends waiting for us when we  arrived.

It was an incredible, action-packed day that was more than I could have ever imagined. It takes my breath away just thinking about it.
