How We Met, her side

I met Nate the year we both transferred to UC Davis. We had been placed in the same housing apartments on campus and on the first night we met each other in front of the laundry room, romantic right? Although Nate was majoring in Managerial Economics and I was majoring in Animal Science, somehow our classes overlapped from time to time and we became really close. I leaned on Nate for advice or just a good laugh. After two years we finally started dating, but it didn’t take me long to fall. Until Nate I never knew how fun it could be to fall in love with your best friend.

How we met, his side:

My beautiful fiancé Kaitlyn, transferred to UC Davis back in 2010. As fate would have it, I transferred to UC Davis that year as well. We both ended up at the same apartment complex on campus. The first night all the transfer students moved in was very hectic. We were meeting new people, a lot of new people. I walked out of my apartment with my new roommates and in front of the laundry area stood a group of girls. One of which was Kaitlyn. She has a smile that can light up a sky and eyes so brown that you can’t help but sing Van Morrison in your head. Needless to say, it didn’t take me long to know that she was special. I wish she felt the same about me.

I am a loud person who loves to talk, she is on the quieter side. It took her a while to warm up to me. Once our friendship started I knew that this woman was different. She was so far out of my league I only dreamt of having someone as funny, smart, kind, understanding, and beautiful (inside and out) to be my wife one day. Two years, a lot of laughter, and an infinite amount of unforgettable memories after Kaitlyn and I met, we began dating. My dreams had come true. Our friendship turned into something so much more. I had always heard that there is nothing better than dating your best friend. I never knew how true that was until Kaitlyn.

How We Found the Ring

A back-story. My best friend Ryan got married in August of 2015. When he was in search of an engagement ring, I remembered my mom mentioning the Jewelry Mart in SF. She’d been to Padis and had a great experience there, so I called and made an appointment for Ryan and I to go. Ryan found exactly what he was looking for and we both had a great time shopping for the engagement ring.

That experience held a lot of weight when it was my turn to shop for an engagement ring. There was no doubt; I would be going to Padis. I called Arthur (the one who’d helped Ryan a couple years ago) at the beginning of October and made an appointment. Shopping for an engagement ring is a big deal, financially and emotionally. My experience with Padis could not have been better. Arthur made everything extremely comfortable. There was no pressure. He was very informative and went above and beyond to show me all of my options within my budget. I could not have asked for a better experience.

How He Asked, her story:

Nate and I had been dating for three and half years when he surprised me with a plane ticket to San Diego to visit my family for the weekend. However, it was only a ticket for me since he said he had work over the weekend. He dropped me off at the airport Friday morning, kissed me goodbye and said he would see me Sunday night. Little did I know what he was really up to…

On Saturday morning I had breakfast plans with my best friend who was going to pick me up. She called and said she was in the driveway, but when I walked outside I found Nate standing in my parent’s front yard.

Nate got down on one knee and asked me to spend forever with him. After I said yes he told me he had another surprise for me. He grabbed another box out and inside was a tiny dog collar with a tag that said “SHE SAID YES.”

Before I knew it we were off to meet our engagement puppy.

Dreams really do come true. Marrying Nate can’t come soon enough!

How he asked, his side

After three and half years of dating I couldn’t wait any longer. I knew exactly what I wanted, to spend the rest of my life with my best friend. Kaitlyn had always talked about how her dream proposal would include a ring and a puppy. I was up for the challenge. I led her to believe that I had to unexpectedly work one weekend and that since I would be gone that she should go see her family and friends. I dropped her off Friday morning at the airport and told her that I would pick her up Sunday evening. (I never had to work that weekend) Saturday morning I woke up and headed to the airport. I had the ring, a bottle of champagne and some anxiety. Once I landed I went and got the rental car. Originally I booked the cheapest car I could find.

When I went out to get my vehicle, I was upgraded to a brand new Mustang. I knew things were going my way. On the drive from the airport to Kaitlyn’s parents house (where I would propose) a song called “Die A Happy Man” came on. I had never heard it before, but I swear it was written about us. I arrived to the house and had Kaitlyn meet me in the front yard. I tried my hardest to recite the lines I had been thinking about for months. Eventually my rambling stopped and I knelt down on one knee. This was it. I pulled out the ring box from my back pocket and asked “Will you marry me?”

She said YES! I then grabbed another box for her to open. Inside that box was a dog collar with a tag that said “she said yes” and later that day we went and visited the newest member of our family, a puppy named Cash.
