Kaitlyn and Kyle's Proposal in Winter Wonderland

How We Met

Kyle and I met in 2012 when he subbed for my bowling team in our company league. Not only was he a decent bowler, but he was also very handsome. I was so drawn to him – to his humor, wit, confidence and kindness. We became fast friends and started dating soon after.

I have spent a lot of time in New York City throughout my life. I once described it to Kyle as the kind of place you either really love or really hate, few are in-between. I love it. The energy, neighborhoods, seasons, wandering, watching the people, everything. I told him about how it had become a part of my soul and that he would never truly know me until he knew NYC.

Three weeks after we started dating Kyle surprised me with tickets to fly there that weekend. We went and stayed in Times Square, ate dinner at Gramercy Tavern and got lost in the subway. I showed him everything I loved. Central Park, Greenwich Village, The High Line, Brooklyn Bridge. We walked everywhere. During a stroll through Battery Park I passed him a few candy conversation hearts. “Call me” – “Be mine” – “U R cute”. He pulled one out and without looking, handed it to me… “Marry me”. I laughed and then ate it. He started sweating and stuttering – “Um, I didn’t see that. Ah, I didn’t mean that”. It became a running joke. In the days, months and years that followed I would remind Kyle that he had actually already proposed to me… “Remember when you asked me to marry you? I haven’t said yes yet”…

Kyle swept me off my feet. He said that he took me on the trip because he wanted to know everything about me – and if I loved NYC that much, he wanted to love it too.

How He Asked

Kyle was planning to recreate the moment that happened early on in our relationship when he accidentally proposed to me in NYC via candy conversation heart (see ‘how we met’). He was working with my sister on plans and logistics when life threw us a curve ball. Last year on December 19th I was diagnosed with MS. The news was sudden, overwhelming and scary, but Kyle was by my side through everything. Literally, everything.

It was all such a whirlwind. I traveled to Seattle the next day to spend the holidays with my family. As soon as I left, Kyle called my sister and said that he was scrapping the original NYC proposal plan. He flew up from LA on Christmas day and surprised me. Beyond happy, I just assumed that he came to be with me for support and was not expecting the even bigger surprise that followed.

Two days later while out snowshoeing in the North Cascades Kyle got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He told me about how he was planning another proposal, but when everything happened with my health he couldn’t wait one more day. After I was diagnosed he promised that he would be there for me, no matter what – but this, he said, was him proving that. To me, our winter wonderland proposal could not have been more perfect — and I, of course, said yes!!
