Kaitlyn and Jason
How We Met
Jason and I met back in 2011; we were in high school, and we ended up having the same elective class. We always talk about what it was like when we first met and what we thought about each other. He has always said the same thing: “I thought you were the most beautiful girl I had ever seen.” After a couple of months of getting to know each other, we went on our first date on October 29th, and that night, he asked me to be his girlfriend.
Throughout the past nearly seven years, we’ve definitely had our ups and downs. We were very young when we started dating, therefore, we encountered many obstacles. One of the hardest obstacles we encountered was long-distance. For many years of our relationship, we were over 80 miles apart. At one point, we were over 500 miles apart. It wasn’t always easy, but keeping God first in our relationship and remembering that it would all be worth it helped us push through it.
Meeting your soulmate early in life comes with challenges, but it also comes with beautiful moments. We’ve literally watched each other grow up, and we’ve been there for each other during so many exciting milestones in life like high school graduations, my last dance recital, and my college graduation – just to name a few.
I couldn’t imagine my life without him, and he truly is my other half. I’m blessed to spend forever with the love of my life.
How He Asked
A few months after Jason and I began dating, we spent an evening out on the beach. We were in one specific spot on the beach – a concrete area with white columns. We were joking around the whole night; at one point, I said something that made him laugh, and then he slipped and told me he loved me.
This was the first time he had said it. He was embarrassed, and he said that it was an accident and he didn’t mean it. However, we both knew and felt that it was genuine and real. This is one of the most special memories of our relationship, therefore, that spot on the beach was known to us as “our spot” after that night.
On the morning of July 21, 2018, we planned on going to the beach and skateboarding. We have skated at “our spot” multiple times – it’s actually the perfect area for skateboarding due to the concrete. He led us there that morning. While we were skating, we saw his sister, Katlyn, walk by us with her camera. She said that she was there to take pictures of the air show that was scheduled to happen later that afternoon. We chatted for a bit, and then Jason suggested that she should take a picture of him doing a few tricks.
He jumped off of a small ledge, but then he fell in the middle of his trick. Obviously, falling is pretty common when you skateboard. But when I realized he wasn’t getting up off the ground, and he was holding his ankle like he was really injured, I ran up to him to check if he was okay. Then, he got up on one knee, explained how much he loved me, and asked me to be his wife.
The proposal couldn’t have been more perfect, and it couldn’t have summed up our personalities any better.
