How We Met

Steven and I went to the same high school and even had the same class together! It wasn’t until three years ago, when Steven read a Facebook post from me that said how much I would like to learn how to paddle-board and enjoy doing it! He responded with “boom lets do it” and that started our conversation leading to our first date on the Fourth of July.
On July 4th i remember how nervous I felt but excited to meet him. We spent the day with friends, laying out on the beach, and walking along the bay hand-in-hand and sharing about ourselves and common beliefs/interests. Then, we watched the fireworks together, which lit the flame for a beautiful love to blossom.

How He Asked

Steven did a lot of planning for the proposal! The proposal was on March 12, 2016 and we began planning in December when he asked my father for my hand in marriage during his birthday celebration in a lake arrowhead cabin. A few months later I was asked by one of his best friends, Andrew Hubbard to paint a picture of a sunset and a silhouette of a man proposing to a girl for their 1st year of marriage present. I began working on the commission painting in November.

Time goes on and Steven asks of ID like to go to a Firefighter award ceremony for Andrew as his might win the Firefighter of the Year award at the long beach art museum. I was very excited because as an artist and art educator I couldn’t wait to scope out the latest exhibition on display and enjoy a nice night and ceremony!

We are getting ready for the “award ceremony” and Steven seemed to lay down a rest a lot while I was getting ready. I didn’t think anything of it because as a police officer his shift is usually late and he works a lot of overtime. We drive to the Long Beach Art Museum and I mention the award ceremony at the entrance. Steven quickly mentions a name and they say, “oh come right in!” We view the installations and ceramics and meet the docent at the 3rd floor where she spoke to us about a piece of artwork.

Steven said he needed to run to the restroom and the docent asked me if I wanted to see a brand new installation on the balcony. I followed her outside to find roses on the ground leading up to my travel easel and the painting I did for “Andrew” with a framed picture. I continued to read the proposal:

“Love is a symbol of eternity. It wipes out all sense of time, destroying all memory of a beginning and all fear of an end.
We search endlessly for that special someone you look forward to waking up with every morning for the rest of your life, that special someone to support and love you to the moon and back, someone special enough to ask this question…”

I turned around and Steven was on one knee and he asked, “Will you marry me?” I said yes! The photographer and videographer captured this spectacular moment at sunset.
Later, Steven surprised me once more by inviting all of our friends and family for a dinner at Federal Bar where we celebrated and shared our excitement.
