Julie and Mitch
How We Met
We met in the break room on my first day at Bed Bath & Beyond in January 2013! We were two broke college students, so we worked a lot and always ended up with the same shifts! From then on, what started out as co-workers slowly transformed into a friendship over the course of a couple of years and we started hanging out outside of work. The instant connection we had was something we never experienced before and the rest was history!
The picture above was one of our first pictures together when we started dating in October 2015!
How He Asked
My Dad passed away when I was 8 years old. He was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery due to his younger years spent in the military. Since then, I wasn’t able to visit him for almost 17 years because we resided in Florida and money was sparse growing up. I remember telling my fiancé, Mitch, that the urge to go see him had been getting stronger the older I became. Finally after graduating college and getting a job, I was able to save money and took my Mitch, mom, and myself to DC in April 2017. That day we left for D.C., Mitch seemed very nervous and quiet. I thought it was just his fear of flying. But even after we got off, he still seemed off, but I wasn’t hung up over it because I had to drive an SUV (I’ve never driven one before!) in DC traffic! So my nerves were shot as well.
We finally arrived (after getting lost multiple times) at Arlington, being able to see my Dad again was very emotional but it also made me happy to see him. While we were there, we were surprised to be approached by my step brother (Dads son from another marriage) and his wife! My mom said “I wasn’t sure you were going to make it!” I was so confused. What was going on? While my mom and I greeted my step brother, Mitch beckoned me over to him. I walked over and he gave me a big hug and asked me if I was ok. I said I was. He proceeded to say, “Well, since your mom and your dad are here…”
Next thing I knew, he was down on one knee asking me to marry him! Having my Dad there and feeling like he had given us his blessing was amazing. (His niche in the picture is the one with the flag.) It was the best surprise ever and he couldn’t have done it any better!
