Julie and Michael
How We Met
We met at a mutual friend’s birthday party almost 5 years ago. I walked in and had noticed a Harley motorcycle in the driveway and asked the host whose bike it was. Mike stood up, let me know it was his, and that he’d love to take me on it sometime. His smile lit up the room and I thought he was beyond charming. We spent the rest of the night chatting and at the end of the night, we exchanged numbers and went our separate ways.
For the next few weeks, we kept running into each other at the beach and bars with separate groups of friends. The third time we ran into each other he said he’d like to “actually” take me on that bike ride and I agreed. This would be the bike ride that changed everything. He picked me up on the motorcycle for my first ever ride and we drove to Sunset Cliffs to go cliff jumping (sorry mom!). Mike has never been a dinner-and-movie first date type of guy. We ended the date eating tacos, swimming, laughing, and watching the sunset on his boat in Mission Bay. If the first date was any indication of what a relationship would be like with this man, I was in.
For the next 4 years, Mike continued to take me on adventures of a lifetime, to introduce me to new things, to travel with me even when my wanderlust takes us somewhere every weekend, and to make me smile every single day.
How He Asked
He called my dad on a Wednesday to ask for his blessing. He and my dad have always been close so it made total sense that after my dad gave him my blessing, the two of them started scheming on the perfect way for Mike to propose.
On Thursday (one day later), I was leaving to Costa Rica to celebrate my uncle’s 50th birthday and for a family reunion. Mike couldn’t come on the trip (or so I thought) due to his upcoming dental board exams so he dropped me off at the airport and I was on my way.
My dad, brother, mom, and I spent the first two days of our vacation in Tamarindo and then headed up to Playa Ocotal on Sunday to meet the rest of the family. The house we were staying at was hard to find so they asked us to meet them at a local restaurant to pick us up.
My dad let us know that the driver would be a few minutes late and asked if we wanted to check out the beach since it was the one closes to the house. We agreed and walked down to the beach. Within a minute or two, someone had come up behind me and put their hands over my eyes. All I could hear was my mom saying “no, no, no” and I thought we may have run into a friend from home. My dad had kept the secret from my mom and brother so they were just as surprised as I was.
When I finally got the hands off my eyes, I turned around to see Mike standing there. I immediately start crying and was just so excited that he was there, in Costa Rica with me. I can honestly say I have never been more surprised or confused in my entire life. The only words that I could form were “what?” and “what are you doing here?”. I still had NO idea what was about to happen.
I always knew Mike would do something big when he proposed but never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that he would have flown 3,500 miles to surprise me in Costa Rica. After a few moments, Mike pulled out the ring and it finally clicked for me what was happening. He was down on one knee asking me to marry him and of course, I said “YES!” through all of my tears.
We spent the rest of the weekend celebrating with the family and are so excited to start the rest of our lives together!
