Jon and Jill
how we met
Jon and I met through my cousin Stephen in 2010 – On the first day we met, a group of us all enjoyed an amazing day down in Penticton, B.C. before heading back to Kelowna for dinner at Grey Monk Winery. The day was filled with tubing down the channel, laughing, farting, great drinks, dressing up, delicious food & a limo ride. Despite the amazing day, Jon & I seemed to connect most over the silliness of why people drink cow’s milk haha. It’s been over 6 years since that day, and looking back we cannot believe the life we’ve built and the amazing people around us.
I’m from the East coast of Canada & Jon’s from the West coast. We’ve been able to travel back to the Maritimes multiple times, so he has spent a lot of time with my family (and has earned himself the name Jon “8 Lobster Rolls” Smith).
how he asked
When it came to the proposal, he schemed with my cousin Stephen and uncle to pull off a surprise Maritime kitchen party in Saint Andrews, N.B. He told all of our family we were going out to dinner, but when it came time to leave for dinner, a catering company arrived with food (with a photographer capturing “promo” shots) and a musician arrived to play live music.
It was an open bar, all you can eat, maritime music shindig with people we love, right in the living room of my aunt and uncle’s home. We all thought the surprise was for Jon’s mom and husband who had joined us for the first time on our trip back east. However, at one point in the night, the musician started playing our song (“Your Song” by Elton John) and Jon asked me to dance.
The whole party began slow dancing and it was beautiful. Near the end of the song, he got down on one knee and asked if I would spend the rest of my life with him. It was a surreal moment, being surrounded by my family and the person I love down on one knee.
By the way – I said YES! The night was an epic surprise for everyone and one hell of a Maritime kitchen party (… and an unruly hangover).
